先日、契約条件変更や機器入れ替えもあって、久しぶりにSan Joseのdata centerに行ったんですが、以前すべて埋まっていたサーバラックがガラガラで、こちらにも不況の波が押しよせているようでした。アメリカの雇用数値は確かに回復しているんですが、一時的な公共工事の影響などもあり、本格的な回復はまだまだというのが一般人の見解のようです。
ところで、この件があったので、営業のエリザベスに連絡を取った所、「あなた、以前1ラック借りたいっていってたわよね？ 今なら借りてくれたらもう1ラックおまけでつけるわよ」とかいう返答がきました（以前はロスじゃないと空いていないと言われた)。ご存知の方もいるかと思いますが、アメリカでは日本と比べて値引きの幅が半端じゃなく、生活雑貨や食料品は、「1つ買えば、2つ無料(Buy one, get two free)」とか80% Offとか、平気で値引いてくるので、もはや通常価格がわからなくなる世界なのですが、まさかビジネスの世界でもやってくるとは……。 と、一瞬思いましたが、考えてみたら、我々の業界でも、ソフトウェアとかCDNの価格とかはあって、ないようなものなわけで、それがDCにも波及しただけか、と、おもむろに納得したのでした。
さて、今週のエントリは、アプリケーションエンジニアの津田さん。以前J.O氏のエントリ にも出てきた、彼女の師匠ですね。
プログラム品質だけでなく、インフラのセットアップや緊急対応など、トータルなサービス開発者として評価の高い彼ですが、厳密な中途採用で入社したのではなく、とあるITスクールからポテンシャル採用された経験を持ちます。今では「津田塾」なんていう、業務外の技術勉強会も定期的に開かれ(※)、すっかり技術者としてのイメージも定着しましたが、彼で真っ先に思い出すのがダイエット。当時、小太りなイメージがあった彼には、どこからともなくお菓子が彼の席に舞い込んできて、それがさらに彼の体重を悪化させる、という状態でしたが、ある時一念発起して、大ダイエットを決意。数ヶ月後、まるで何かの雑誌の「使用前」「使用後」みたいな体型に変わったのでした。
お願いして技術ネタ書いてもらいましたけど、考えてみたらこのブログは他と比べて女性読者それなりに多いみたいなので、彼の過去のダイエットネタを書いてもらった方が人気が出たかもしれませんね...。

The other day I made a visit to our data center in San Jose to replace the servers and to change some business conditions with the data center company.Then, I found that a lot of server racks were vacant. Last time I visited, there all of the racks were occupied. I wonder if it has something to do with the U.S. recession. As you may know, the U.S. unemployment rate is now improving. However, many U.S. people think the improving rate has something to do with the temporary investment in public works by the government, and it will take more than a few months for the economy to recover fully.
By the way, finding the vacant ranks caused me to contact the San Jose data center salesperson, Elizabeth, again to see if they can offer additional racks for us because they rejected the offer about a year ago. This time, she told me we could lease two racks at half-price if we lease more than two racks. As you may know, U.S. shops and supermarkets like Wal-Mart or Fry's Electronics usually discount items more heavily than in Japan. They usually offer 80% off and buy one, get two free. I'm already familiar with these kinds of sales for household goods and apparel. However, it was big surprise for me that they apply the rule to our business.
Well...this week's article is written by one of the veteran application engineers, Tsuda-san. He is a person Ms. Okuda mentioned before. He was Okuda's programming teacher.
We have always respected his high-quality programming code, high level of skill with IT hardware, his sense of responsibility as well as his absolute skill in making a new web service. Actually, he had no experience in making code when he first entered our company. He made it into our company because he has much potential to be a first-rated engineer. Now, his highly technical skills are well-known among his co-workers. However, whenever I mention him, I always recall his diet.
He successfully lost about twenty pounds because of it. People who knew him before think he is a much different person today. This time, I asked him to write a technical article. However, I'm sure some people would rather hear about a diet than a technical topic. Perhaps the diet topic would have been a popular blog article this time.
