@VERONA: Japanese women open their hearts to Juliet
The dazzling summer light is gone; autumn is here in Italy, with the chilly wind blowing in the evening.
On a long autumn night, it is nice to think of a love story, to warm one's heart.
Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," set in the northern Italian city of Verona, which today still retains old rows of houses from the medieval period, might be one of the best-known love stories in the world.
I visited "Juliet's House," learning that many letters addressed to Juliet are arriving from Japan.
Manuela Uber, one of the unpaid "Juliet's secretaries" at the house who is in charge of replying to the Japanese letters, was sitting in front of a pile of letters from Japan.
She added their letters were longer, their writing meticulous and letter paper they write on is beautiful.
Uber quotes one woman in her 20s as writing, "I realized the importance of the people around me after the quake."
A woman in her 50s who lives by herself also wrote that she felt lonely after the quake.
Uber extends her sympathy to women in Japan, who still live in anxiety.
Another woman from the Tohoku region wrote, "Frightened to death, I felt deeply attached to my boyfriend."

「ベローナより。日本人女性がジュリエットに打ち明ける」
「ロミオとジュリエット」はあまりにも有名なラブロマンス小説ですね。
イタリアのベローナは「ロミオとジュリエット」の舞台ですが、そこに、「ジュリエットハウス」があるそうです。
そちらに、東日本大震災以後、多くの手紙が寄せられるそうです。以前は、そんなに多くは、日本からの手紙はなかったそうです。
そのジュリエットハウスでボランティアの運営員のUberさんは、日本人女性は、世界の他の国に比べて、自分の心の内を人に明かさないと思うのだそうです。ところが、震災以降、日本人女性から数多くの被災者自身がかかえる心配、愛する人への溢れる思いなどが綴られ寄せられているそうです。
「打ち明ける」事は、答えを求めることが目的ではなく、「打ち明ける」事自体が、自分を癒すことの助けになるのでしょうね。
この記事は、震災後の心のケアに関するもののひとつだと思いますが、辛く悲しくなってばかりの内容ではなく、どちらかと言うと、明るく前向きに、そして、さわやかな気持ちになれるものだと思います。
