「草の根」を表す英語はgrass rootsである。直訳だと農業地区、末端、基礎等の意味。「草の根」：19世紀のアメリカで始まったとされる。
当時アメリカはゴールドラッシュで、金は草のよく茂った山脈の土壌の表層の下に隠れていると噂され、やがて草の根は末端の民衆の意味を表すようになった。
