The U.S. Senate announced a last-minute deal on Wednesday to avert a historic lapse in the government's borrowing ability and a potentially damaging debt default, and to reopen the government after a two-week shutdown.
At the end of the 16th day of the government shutdown, the Senate on Wednesday voted 81-18 to pass a bill that would reopen the government and avert a potentially cataclysmic default on U.S. debt payments by raising the federal government's debt limit.
米、デフォルト回避へ＝政府機関、きょうにも再開―上下両院、合意案可決の公算

【ワシントン時事】米上下両院は16日、連邦債務上限引き上げと政府機関再開に向けた上院与野党合意案を採決する。両院で可決される見通しで、オバマ大統領は速やかに署名。深刻な金融危機を招くと懸念された米国債のデフォルト（債務不履行）は17日の「期限」ぎりぎりで回避、2週間以上続いた政府機関の閉鎖は同日にも解除される可能性が高い。
合意内容は、連邦債務の法定上限を来年2月7日までの借り入れ分について引き上げ、デフォルトを回避。また、同年1月15日までの2014会計年度（13年10月～14年9月）暫定予算を成立させて政府機関を再開することが柱。
