Last week, I left Boston for several days and visited Washington DC.
I visited the Russel Senate Office Building in Washington DC to talk with staffs of Senate Armed Services Committee who are working for Chairman Carl Levin.
I explained to them the latest Japanese political situations regarding collective self-defense. I reported to them the results of opinion polls which indicated that more than 50% of the Japanese people were opposing collective self-defense and that more than 80% were demanding more explanation from the government.
I advised to them that the Japanese people were demanding more information because they wanted to decide the issue by themselves and that they recognized their own democratic power in the 2009 and 2012 general elections in which they changed the government.
The staffs of Senate Armed Services Committee advised to me that the next year's legislation process regarding collective self-defense would provide more information to the Japanese people whether the Japanese people would ultimately decide to adopt collective self-defense or not.
Also, I visited the office of Senator Edward J. Markey (Democrat - MA) in the Russel Senate Office Building and talked with his senior policy adviser.
Personally, I have a great admiration to Senator Markey because of his remarkable contribution to promoting renewable energies in the U.S. including introduction of a famous Waxman-Markey bill of 2009 which was aiming at the US nationwide cap and trade market.
Senator Markey is now a member of Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee.
Last year, Senator Markey introduced a bill of the American Renewable Energy and Efficiency Act which was aiming at the establishment of the US nationwide renewable energy portfolio standard.
Senator Markey is a member of Senate Foreign Relations Committee too. So, he is responsible for US national security policy as well.
The senior policy adviser for Senator Markey was a really terrific and the most progressive person. We completely agreed in every policy aspect ranging from renewable energies, freedom of speech, to national security.
I advised to him that I had contacts with members of the Japanese Parliament and that exchanging information between legislators of the United States and Japan was important. He agreed.
At the end of the meeting, I said to him, "I hope this is the beginning of great cooperation between legislators of the United States and Japan in the area of renewable energies." He replied, "Sounds great!"

昨年、マーキー上院議員は、連邦レベルでの再生可能エネルギー割合基準の設定を目的とした、「The American Renewable Energy and Efficiency Act」法案を提出しました。
マーキー上院議員は、上院外交委員会のメンバーでもあります。そのため、アメリカの安全保障政策にも携わっています。
マーキー上院議員のシニア政策アドバイザーは、きわめて進歩的で、たいへん素晴らしい方でした。私と彼は、再生可能エネルギー、言論の自由、国家安全保障など、あらゆる分野で、意見が一致しました。
私は、彼に、私が日本の国会議員とコンタクトがあることを伝え、日本の国会議員とアメリカ連邦議会議員との情報交換の大切さを伝えました。
