This clip shows the late great Kumu Hula – Aunty Emma DeFries – followed by the group “Olomana” with Jerry Santos and Robert Beaumont singing near Nuʻuanu Stream on Oʻahu. Aunty Emma recites the words of an old chant, while Jerry and Robert sing “Come to me gently” afterwards. She shares with us an ancient practice of the Hawaiian family sharing breaths “hā” with one another. The chant says…

From their album “Olomana” it reads… “Come To Me Gently is Olomana's effort to call people back to the spirit that is Hawaii. This music stressed the importance in sharing between the generations. A real labor of love, this recording was inspired by Auntie Emma DeFries who wrote "E Ku'u Sweet Lei Poina 'Ole" and taught us her Grandmother's "Pua Alani". This CD contains the only known recording of her singing”.
That album was recorded in the 1970’s when the Hawaiian Renaissance was in full swing. I remember my mother watching this clip in Carson, California with tears running down her face. It did indeed bring us back – back to the spirit of Hawaiʻi. It made us all homesick living far across the sea yearning for our home – the land of our ancestors, our genealogy, and our birth. What great memories during those early years…it was the beginning of all things Hawaiian for the Hawaiian people i.e., hula, Hawaiian language, history, pride etc… I am so truly grateful to my parents for raising me and my family with Hawaiian dignity, loyalty, love and respect for our ancestors. This clip personified that pride for us – and we still hold on to that pride today!
