IAEA’s false announcment: “Stop to the sale of all food from Fukushima”

[Vienna / Masahiro Sato] The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on March 19, 2011 that the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) “ordered a stop to the sale of all food products from the Fukushima Prefecture” in response to the detection of radioactive substances, including radioactive iodine, exceeding the preliminary regulated amount, defined by the Food Hygiene Law, in the milk produced in Fukushima prefecture and spinach from Ibaraki prefecture, following the sampling on food executed after the accidents of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

It is said to be a haste prejudgment on the part of the IAEA, and the Director General of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, indicated that there were confusions with the information collected by the IAEA, which had requested submission of precise information when he visited Japan. Reportedly, many overseas news agencies and TV stations have already flashed the announcement.
