The company relented and is allowing workers to return to work 9:30 AM Tuesday, as per court order! Congratulations Stella workers for staying strong all this time. You are an inspiration!
Mike Fillipou says Joyce Alston, Local 50 President, is asking that supporters join them at the plant (237th Broadway). Try to be there by 8:30 am Tuesday or as early as possible so we can talk to Alston about where to go from here before returning to work. Let's find out what she plans to do. If you're comming, bring flowers, confetti, boxes of candy, etc. if possible.
Alston will be meeting with workers to discuss L. 50 strategy. She says there may be a press conference in a couple of days. Lets listen to what the workers say about whats going on.
Speaking for myself, this is a great victory but one fraught with dangers. As I see it 1) going back means production resumes and the leverage that brings is gone. They can go out again but that's difficult - which the boss knows. 2) the company is threatening to close in October (!) - a pressure tactic to settle for less or true? 3) Many New York workers will believe the struggle is over. Its Not!! We must continue the boycott!
We will be with the Stella workers until the very end!
This took me by surprise even though it is so typical for runaway capital to use labor militancy as an excuse to flee. It is also capital's attempt to intimidate the NLRB, and, of course, the union local will be blamed for courageously defending the workers against super exploitation. This is always capital's ace- in-the-hole when their is no worker control or state intervention. Community responsibility means nothing to Brynwood. It is a sad ending to a good fight which only heightens workers' understanding of how private capital acts when challenged uphold equity and justice.
Striking Stella D'Oro workers went back to work today ending the strike of 10 months. Thier strength was phenominal. They went back because the company complied yesterday with an NLRB ruling.
People seem to be glad to be back at work and remain strong. They will work under the old contract and must negotiate a new one. Without a strike, that will be difficult. Solidarity is definately needed more now than ever.
Also, the company bosses sent out a release yesterday saying that they want to sell the building and relocate in '90 days. We are preparing to launch a struggle against that. It will certainly be used to squeeze concessions. Its a big threat that we must struggle against.
The union, workers and supporters will devise a strategy to continue the struggle against the closure and for a new contract. The union wants to hold a big rally. The support Committee has discussed a July 17 rally. Apparently the boycott is off, says the union.
