デンバー五輪もたけなわの２月１８日。アフガニスタン南部で２人のアメリカ海兵隊員がタリバンの放った銃弾に倒れた。

２人はオバマがアフガン情勢転換の大きなてこにしようとして２月１２日に開始されたタリバンの拠点、ヘルマンド州マージャの制圧作戦に参加していた。

戦死した２人はともに１９歳だった。アメリカ東海岸のペンシルバニア州とバージニア州の出身。

アフガンの戦死者の統計をまとめている米民間団体icasuality.org によれば、２００１年のアフガン戦争開始以来、２人の死でアメリカ軍の戦死者が９９９人になった。どちらが９９８番目でどちらが９９９番目の戦死者かわからないが、家族や友人たちにとっては何万人の死に値する悲しみだろう。

一方で、アメリカの反戦団体は戦死者が１０００人に達した時点で大規模は抗議集会をニューヨークで開催することをアナウンスしている。反戦団体から送られてきたメールの一部を掲載する。

無味乾燥な政府発表文と反戦団体のビラ。いずれの文書にも２人の死の実像は見えてこない。
