Jump the Gun
jumpは他動詞で「～を飛び越える」という意味があります。
だから、
The boy jumped the ditch.
「少年は溝を跳び越えた。」
という文になります。
では、「jump the gun」は「銃を飛び越える」という意味なのでしょうか？
ところで…
今年の秋も全国で運動会が開催されました。
玉入れ、綱引き、組み体操…
子供たちにとってとっても楽しい運動会。
中でも一番の花形はかけっこでしょう。
「ヨーイ、ドン」
軽快な音楽と歓声の中、子供たちが元気に走り出します。
アレアレ？
競技が止められました。
なぜでしょう？
どうやら気の早い子がフライングしてしまったようです。
フライングはピストルの合図よりも早く飛び出してしまうことですね。
そうです！
はやまって何かをしてしまうことを「jump the gun」と言うのです。
longmanの定義ではこうなっています。
to start doing something too soon, especially without thinking about it carefully
よく考えないでというニュアンスがあるようですね。
Funfun is always jumping the gun.
「ファンファンはいつもはやとちりしている。」
こんな使い方が多いようです。
Don’t jump the gun! Calm down.
「慌てるな！落ち着け。」
Let’s not jump the gun.
「焦らないでいこうよ。」
短いのですぐに覚えられますね。
ビートルズファンならこの曲が頭に浮かんだはずですね。
