マイケルのステージ衣装は、
世界を平和へ導く音楽戦士としての象徴でしたが、
マイケルのスタイルの中で、彼自身のリアルな戦闘服だったのは、
2003～2005年の裁判の出廷の時のスーツ姿ですよね。
私、この時の彼のスタイルこそ、
当時40代半ばのマイケル自身の姿を表していたと思うんです。

マイケルジャクソンは、決して二度同じものを着ませんでした。
だから、彼の法廷での衣装は、その日毎に作られました。
彼のコスチュームデザイナーはそう明かしました。
ロスのデザイナー、マイケル・ブッシュとデニス・トンプキンスは、
マイケルの衣装を20年以上に渡って作ってきました。
ブッシュは、その日毎に午前3時に起きて―カラフルなプリントのベストとミリタリー調のディティールが施されたスーツを一揃いもって、―ジャクソンのネヴァーランドランチに行き、スターの仕度をしたと、今週、ﾛｻﾝｼﾞｪﾙｽﾀｲﾑｽﾞに語りました。
ジャクソンはいつも彼に感謝をし、抱きしめてくれたとブッシュは言いました。
「私たちは、街の周辺に2～3のジャケットを作る仕立て屋を持っていました。
私たちは、それらを充分に間に合うように早く作れなかったからです。」
ふたりは、9時には就寝するように努めましたが、時には11時までになりました。
「私たちは、全ての写真を撮ります。
それは、マイケルのために何かを作る場合、二着同じものを要請される恐れが
あることを学んだからです。一式がロックの殿堂の博物館かマダムタッソーに
行くかもしれないので、彼は自分自身のために一つはキープしておくことを
望んだのです。」
児童性的虐待の容疑に直面しているジャクソンは、法廷での華やかな服装をメディアから批判されています。しかし、デザイナーは、その批判は不当だったと言います。
彼らは、ジャクソンの寸法で作られたマネキンを使用して、彼の法廷でのワードローブを作ります。
ジャクソンは、裁判所への出席にはあえてダークスーツを選び、初期の出席の後の
白いスーツにメディアは大騒ぎをしたのです。
そのコスチュームの着想は、デザイナーらがスターと共に雑誌から研究して得ました。
ジャクソンは最後の調停者なのです。そうブッシュは言いました。
ブッシュが言うには、ある時、ジャクソンはデザイナーを挑発して
「これは、世界の装いの何であるかというと、その頂点なんだよ！」と言ったとのこと。
ジャクソンのベストは、インドのシルクで、ヨーロッパでデザインされた手の込んだジャガード、ロスのダウンタウンの爬虫類のフェイク素材で作られたとブッシュは述べました。
ジャクソンはミリタリー調のディテールを愛していました。
何故なら、それらは「注目させずにはおかない・・スッキリとした美しいラインでまるでダンス衣装のようにピッタリくる」からなのです。
しかしながら、ジャクソンの服は贅沢なものに見えます。価格はひとつの問題でした。
ブッシュ曰はく、「彼はビジネスマンです。多くの人が彼がお金のことなどなんら気にしないと決めてかかっていますが、それは違います。」
数年来、このデザイナーらは、ウール、シルク、キャンバス、リプストップ織物、ナイロンシルバー、ゴールド、イギリスの勲章、警察のバッジ、車の部品でさえ使ってきました。
彼らはボンネットの装飾から作ったものや、他にはヨーロッパのレーシングクラブの記章で飾ったジャケットを作りました。
ブッシュ曰はく、ジャクソンはある時真夜中に電話をして聞いたのです。
「世界中の男性、女性、子供、皆が知っているものを一つ挙げるとなんだと思う？」
ミッキーマウスが第一にブッシュの心に思い浮かびました。
しかし、ジャクソンが考えたのは、食事の道具だったのです。
「彼はこう言いました。"君なら僕の装いに用いるには、どんな風に作る？"」
その結果は、前からナイフとフォークとスプーンをぶら下げたジャケットでした。
「マイケルは、それを彼の“ディナージャケット”と呼びます。
これは、ユーモアなんですよ。誰も知らない彼の人間性の一面です。」とブッシュは言いました。
ふたりは、彼らの依頼人は、もしかしたらもうすぐ刑務所のストライプを着るかもしれないことを恐れずにはいられないと語りました。

Michael Jackson never wore the same thing twice and his courtroom clothes were made each day, his costume designers have revealed.
Los Angeles designers Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins have been making the singer's clothes for more than 20 years.
Bush told the Los Angeles Times this week that he awoke each day at 3am to take the day's outfit - invariably a colourful print vest and a suit with military details - to Jackson's Neverland Ranch, where he dressed the star.
Jackson always thanked him and gave him a hug, Bush said.
"We have two or three tailors around town making jackets because we can't make them fast enough," Bush said.
The pair tried to get to sleep by 9pm, but sometimes were up until 11pm.
"And we photograph everything. That, we learned out of fear because we would make something for Michael and he would call us later to ask for a double. Maybe an outfit goes to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland or Madame Tussaud's in London, and he wants one to keep for himself," Bush said.
Jackson, who is facing charges of child molestation, has been criticised by the media for his flamboyant courtroom attire. But the designers said the criticism was unfair.
They create his courtroom wardrobe using a mannequin built to Jackson's dimensions.
Jackson preferred dark suits for his court appearances after his initial appearance in a white suit sparked a media uproar.
Inspiration for the costumes came from magazines the designers examined with the star. Jackson was the final arbiter, Bush said.
Bush said Jackson once issued a challenge to the designers: "This is what the world's wearing. Top it."
Jackson's vests were made with silk from India, elaborate jacquard designs from Europe and faux reptile fabric from downtown Los Angeles, Bush said.
He said Jackson loved military details because they "demand attention . . . have clean lines and they fit almost like dance clothes".
Though Jackson's clothes appeared extravagant, price was an issue, Bush said. "He's a businessman. A lot of people assume money means nothing to him, but that's not true."
Over the years, the designers have used wool, silk, canvas, ripstop nylon, silver, gold, British regalia, police badges and even car parts. They made a jacket with elements crafted from bonnet ornaments and another festooned with badges from European racing car clubs.
Bush said Jackson once called in the middle of the night and asked: "What's the one thing that every man, woman and child in the world knows?"
Mickey Mouse was the first thing that came to Bush's mind. But eating utensils were what Jackson was thinking. "He said, 'How are you going to make that into clothing for me?"'
The result was a jacket with knives, forks and spoons hanging from the front.
"Michael calls it his dinner jacket, that's the humour, the human side that no one knows," Bush said.
The pair said they were aware their client could soon be wearing prison stripes.
