今朝、Globe and Mailを読んでいたら面白い表現を見つけました。
「救急車のサイレンの音」って、使い分けがあるって知っていましたか？
私は、「日本に比べてこっちのサイレンはなんだか騒々しいな～」とは思っていたのですが、
使い分けをしていたとは知りませんでした。
以下、引用です。
Ambulance drivers in the city have traditionally relied on a menagerie of siren sounds to alert motorists and clear a path through traffic:
The wail for longer distances,
the yelp on approach to an intersection,
the air horn and
more tech-like rat-tat-tat of the phaser for recalcitrant motorists who won't move out of the way.
the wail = サイレンの甲高い音（ピーポーパーポー、ウィーン）
the yelp = キャンキャンした金切り声（ピュウピュウ、パオパオ）
the air horn = 空気のラッパ（ブォーーッ）
tech-like rat-tat-tat of the phaser = 機械っぽい、がんがんとした整相器（キンキン、カンカン）
wail は長い距離を走るとき、 yelp は交差点に近づいたとき、air horn とrat-tat-tatは上記二つでも車が動かないときに
使うらしいです。
色々組み合わせていたんですねー、どうりで騒々しいはずです。皆さんも、今度救急車が通りがかったときに音に気をつけてみてください。
