前回の話では抜けてた、Jベックに「テレ・ギブ」が渡った後のことについて、シーモア・ダンカンの別コメントから。
『「テレ・ギブ」のあらかたの細工を終えた後の数日の間、私はそのギターが唯一無二で、ジェフの才能に見合ったものになるよう、細部の仕上げに励んだ。ひとたび作業が完了しジェフのところへ持っていくと、彼は興味を惹かれたようだった。その時、私は偉大なギタリストの働きを助ける道具をつくりたいと願っていただけで、見返りを期待していたわけではなかった。
あとで、ジェフのマネージャー、ラルフ・ベイカーが3本分のギターを入れたダッフルバッグを提げてやって来た。そのバッグにはバラバラのボディとネックが3本分入っており、ジェフがどれでも欲しいのをひとつあげる、とのこと。私はエスクワイアを選んで、それを元通りに組み立てた。
見返りを望んでいたわけではなかったが、その時は、この取引は実に正当なものではないかと思った。それが後にどれほどの価値を持つものになろうかなんて、当時は取る由もなかったのだ。
私はそれを、それはそれは手厚く扱ってきたが、近年は、多くの人が目に触れることができるようロックンロールの殿堂博物館に展示してある。売ってくれという人も多いが、それは歴史を象る重要な一コマであり、世界が共有するのものであってほしいと願う』。
んー、これまで伝わってた話とちょっと違うような…。
後でベック側からお礼に持ってきたバーツの中に、ヤードバーズ時代のエスクワイアがあった。ボディ左下のコンター加工やその上の傷などで、ファンならそれとすぐに気づく。ダンカンはそれを目敏く見つけて、ペアになる「ESQUIRE」のネーム入りネックと合わせて拝領した、ということですね。
これについてベック本人は何といってるか? 下の映像はDVD「Jeff Beck Rock'n'Roll Party」のボーナストラックとして収録された、「自宅でギターについて語る」から。初っ端にテレ・ギブが紹介されています。
ここでは「ダンカンの方からが物々交換しないかと持ちかけて来た」と語っています。どちらが正しい?
愛用の楽器さえも手荒く扱うことで有名なベックのこと、ダンカンの描写の方がより具体的であり、彼の言ってることが正解ということではないでしょうか。気軽にパーツで出しちゃったけど、元の姿に戻ってみれば実は重要な記念の品だった、と。
とすると、動画で語っている「弦も当時のままだよ」というのも思い違いということか?

Overthe course of the next several days I worked on each detail of theguitar, so that it would be something unique and worthy of Jeff’stalent. Once it was finally ready, I brought Jeff the completed guitarand he seemed impressed by it. I wasn’t expecting anything in return atthe time – I just wanted to build something that could be put to gooduse by an amazing guitar player. Later on, Jeff’s manager Ralph Bakercame in and brought three guitars in a duffle bag – he said Jeff wantedme to pick any one I wanted. The bag had three bodies and three necksthat were disassembled. I choose the Esquire and went to putting it back together.
Even though I wasn’t expecting anything in return, back then tradeswere pretty common and we didn’t know the guitars we had would become as valuable as they are now. I made sure to take great care of that guitar and in recent years it has been on display for the public to see at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum. People have asked me if I wouldsell it but it’s a great piece of history and I want to make sure it isshared with the world.
