How to Trim a Video Online Without Installing Anything (The Easiest Way I Found)

Last week I recorded a 12-minute video of my dog on my phone. The funny part lasted less than a minute, but everything before and after it was just me waiting for him to do something interesting.

I didn't want to send a 12-minute video when only 45 seconds actually mattered.

I also didn't want to install a video editor or spend half an hour learning new software. I just wanted to cut the clip, save it, and send it.

If you've searched for how to trim a video online, you've probably seen dozens of articles recommending complicated editing software for a simple task. For most people, that's unnecessary.

Here's the easiest method I found.

Step 1: Prepare Your Video

Before you begin, make sure your video is saved on your device.

Most phones record videos in MP4 or MOV format, and both are widely supported by online video trimming tools.

If your file is very large (for example, a long 4K recording), uploading may take a little longer. That's completely normal.

Once the upload finishes, you'll see your video's timeline and be ready to trim it.

Step 2: Upload the Video and Trim the Part You Want

For this tutorial, I used VideoCutter.io because it let me start editing immediately without requiring account creation during my test.

The process is simple:

  1. Open the website.

  2. Upload your video or drag it onto the page.

  3. Wait for the upload to finish.

  4. Adjust the trim handles to select the section you want to keep.

The trimming controls are straightforward:

  • Left slider: selects where your clip starts.

  • Right slider: selects where your clip ends.

Everything between the two sliders will remain in the final video.

For my video, the funny moment started at 8:12 and ended around 9:03, so I moved the left slider to 8:12 and the right slider to 9:03.

Before exporting, I played the preview once to make sure I hadn't accidentally cut off the beginning or ending of the clip.

A Small Tip

Instead of trimming exactly on the first moment of the action, leave about half a second before and after the important part. It makes the finished clip feel much more natural.

Step 3: Export the Trimmed Video

Once you're happy with the selection, export the trimmed video.

If the tool offers multiple output formats, MP4 is usually the safest choice because it works well on nearly every phone, computer, and tablet.

After exporting, download the new video and watch it once before deleting the original file. It's much easier to make adjustments while you still have the original recording.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

You Can Trim a Video More Than Once

If you later decide to shorten the clip even further, simply upload the trimmed version and repeat the process.

While every re-export can introduce a small amount of compression, one or two trims usually won't produce noticeable quality loss for everyday videos.

MP4 Is Usually the Best Choice

Unless you specifically need another format, MP4 offers the best balance between compatibility, quality, and file size.

Large Videos May Take Longer

Most everyday phone videos upload without any issues, but very large files may require additional processing time depending on your internet connection and the online tool you're using.

Why Not Just Use the Built-in Photos App?

Both iPhone Photos and Google Photos can trim videos, and they're great options if you're already editing on your phone.

However, if your video is already on your computer, using an online tool can be more convenient. You can upload, trim, and download the finished clip without transferring the file between devices.

Final

For a simple task like cutting a short section from a video, you don't need professional editing software.

A lightweight online video trimmer can finish the job in just a few minutes with almost no learning curve.

If all you need is to remove the beginning and end of a video, keeping the process simple is often the fastest solution.
