Alternatives While you going into the city of Salamanca, you will approach the ancient history and the splendid culture. No wonder people call it "City of Wisdom". Before coming here to Salamanca, I had no idea about this city. In my mind, Spain was full of bloody bullfighting and active Flamengo dance. There were many architectures in middle ages and narrow streets. Everything is so slow, quiet and elegant. Most of the passangers are young students who have poured limitless activation and fresh blood to the ancient city.
Churches and Monasteries: The weather in May, though sunny but the air is also fresh and a little cold. Many people still get down garments on. I started my tour from Plaza del Concilio de Trento near the hotal. There were no person on the plaze. Iglesia de San Esteban and Convento de las Duenas stand on the two sides of the plaze. It was early and most of Lglesia de San Esteban was still in the shadow, but it couldn't prevent its special stereo beauty. There is a triumphal arch like a large sacrificial altar. Convento de las Duenas was surrounded by external walls. You cannot see clearly from outside, but can feel more mysterious atmosphere. While savoring Iglesia de San Esteban from a distance, and I accidentally glanced into the convent, I found a nun with pure white clothes opening the window and getting the quilt basked. Her posture was very elegant, and her eyes were focused and pure. I wanted to look clearly, but she dispeared in the back of the window.
New Churches and Old Churches: Departed from Plaza del Concilio de Trento, I walked along the bluestoned street, and found buildings on both sides were either had tall walls or had small windows on the stoned walls. There was no much broad perspective. But while climbed up some stairs, you can get a better view. There was a square with shade around, and it had bigger area. There were two very grand scale and imposing buildings standed there. The Catedral Nueva and the Museo de Art Nouveau y Art Deco. Many high school students were on the square. They told me that they were here to visit the University of Salamanca, and the old city landscape by the way. The church was built by JuanGil de Hontanon firstly from 1513 to 1560. Later it was enlarged until 1733. Acually in the later stage, there was no enough money, so many details were not finished. In Spain, people never say that they have finished a church but that the project is still on after adding the last stone.
Four beautiful big arcs divided the church into several parts. The gothic decorations on the central gate go through the head of the gate and form different scenes which draw the Holly stories. The light sculptures beside the gate attract my attention. One of them wears a spacesuit and the other one is eating an cream. The guide expains that Salamanca has ever come across a natural disaster and damaged the church. Until 1990s, the government repaired it. Then the craftsmen played a joke and built up the fashionable sculptures. The inside building style iwhich unites many elements such as Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque is extremely richful. To distinguish them completely, you must own certain professional knowledge. We were busy savoring the magnificent colorful glass windows, the giant pipe organ and the court with extremely complex carves. But the guide said lightly : "this can not be called beautiful cathedral,I need you to see this--" Then the guide led us to a dome, saying : "look, inside the dome there are the most beautiful paintings and carves in all of spanish catholic churches."
It is ture that on the vault draws numberous angels, goddess and flowers. Though it has a long history, the colors are still fresh and beauiful. Even the golden sketches make it splendid. You can walk into the Catedral Veija directly from one side of the new church. Even if the old church is covered by the new one, it has ever been praised and canonized by the church designers. The old church built up in 12nd century can be called the classic of Roman architecture. Especially the Torre del Gallo is most famous. There are two lyres of windows and it shows natural lighting.
Under the vault there were sculpture of stigma with patterns of vivid scenes of fighting and all kinds of monsters. Though the church had lots of damage, fortunately this classic of art was preserved intactly. The San Martin chapel was under the lighting tower, and the wall-painting in the chaple was composed in 13th century. The huge altar decoration of the central apse was created in 1445, it was formed by 53 small diagrams about the story of christ and the virgin mary. The details of both characters and architectures were fine. We can see the architectures and the costumes of the society at that time clearly.
