オスカー監督マーティン・スコセッシが、米HBOが手がけるTVドラマのパイロット版。

米東海岸のギャンブルのメッカ、ニュージャージー州アトランティックシティの1920年代の誕生と隆盛を描く、ネルソン・ジョンソンのノンフィクション小説「ボードウォーク・エンパイア（Boardwalk Empire）」が原作。「グッドフェローズ」や「カジノ」でマフィア社会を描いた、スコセッシ監督にはうってつけの企画だ。

スコセッシは製作総指揮も務め、「ディパーテッド」でアカデミー助演男優賞候補になった俳優マーク・ウォールバーグも共同で製作総指揮にあたり、プロジェクトに加わるという。

ただし問題は、多数の映画プロジェクトを控えて超多忙を極めるスコセッシ監督のスケジュール。現在、レオナルド・ディカプリオ主演のスリラー「シャッター・アイランド」のポストプロダクション中だが、もしこの巨匠を新TVシリーズに引っ張り込むことができれば、「ザ・ソプラノズ／哀愁のマフィア」クラスの人気ドラマを仕立てたいHBOの思惑と一致する。
