Martin Scorsese's "Silence":
Now I am reading its original novel "沈黙"(Silence) which was written by 遠藤周作(Shusaku Endo).

In it the protagonist Father Sebastian Rodrigo said that the Japanese peasants were forced to work like Oxen/Horses (=Slaves), and all of Buddhism Priests were in the rulers' side and they've never tried to rescue any enslaved peasants.

But please remember this role had been fulfilled by almost all of Priests of 'the True Pure Land Buddhism' more than 50 years ago until 1580 before they were completely defeated by the former ruler, Nobunaga Oda and obeyed the rulers afterward.

Yes!!! The Christianity was 'Just' the replacement of 'the True Pure Land Buddhism.'
