"白鵬"(Hakuho) is one of the Three Greatest Sumo wrestlers in history!

His life-time record is "934勝195敗33休 (87場所)" which means "934 wins, 195 losses and 33 withdraws in 87 tornaments."

It's very impressive!

Now, "大鵬"(Taiho) was the great hero when I was very young.

His life-time record is "872勝182敗136休"(872 wins, 182 losses and 136 withdraws). Taiho is the legendary Greatest Sumo wrestler in Sumo history who we can call a Pele or a Maradona in Football.

Hakuho is "白鵬" in Chinese character. Taiho is "大鵬" respectively. Please note the similarity in their names. (^_^)v

"白"(Haku) is "White." "大"(Tai) is "Big" or "Great." "鵬"(Ho or Hou) is a legendary Great Bird in Chinese myth or legend.

I strongly belive that the master of Hakuho named him after Taiho who is the legendary greatest Yokoduna.

And also, I suppose his Sumo name, "Hakuho" came from "柏鵬" which is also pronounced as "Haku-Ho" or "Haku-Hou."

The era of Taiho was also called "柏鵬時代"(the era of "Haku-Ho"). "柏"(Haku) signified Taiho's arch rival, "柏戸"(Kashiwado). Their relationship is like the one between Real Madrid and Barcelona in Football.

Note: "柏" has two types of pronunciation, "Haku" and "Kashiwa" like "光"(Light) has two types of pronunciation, "Ko/Kou" and "Hikari." And also "柏" includes "白" in its Chinese character.

One more thing. The Chinese character, "柏"(Pronunciation: Kashiwa or Haku) includes "木"(Tree) in the left side and "白"(White) in the right side. So, "柏" signifies "White Tree."

Now, "柏" is "Oak Tree" in English. Do these things ring a bell? I remembered the White Tree of Gondor in "The Lord of the Rings" by J. R. R. Tolkien. (^_^)v

If I am asked who are the three greatest Sumo wrestlers, I say they are "双葉山"(Futa-Ba-Yama/Twin Leaves Mountain), Taiho and Hakuho.

If they are the five greatest Sumo wrestlers, I will add "北の湖"(Kita-no-Umi/Northern Lake) who is, I suppose, the current president of Sumo company and "貴乃花"(Taka-no-Hana/Noble Flower).

Who is the most popular Sumo wrestler in history? It's "貴ノ花"(Taka-no-Hana). But, he is not "貴乃花"(Taka-no-Hana) I picked up as the five greatest but his father.

"双葉山"(Futabayama) (1912/2/9 - 1968/12/16) is the Sumo wrestler of Myth. Please note that he retired, I believe, in 1945. We had the Sumo tournaments during the World War 2 in Tokyo! (◎o◎)

The Record of "双葉山"(Futabayama):
Life-Time: 348 wins, 116 losses, 33 withdraws and 1 draw/Winning Percentage: 750%
In the 1st Division("幕内"/Maku-Uchi): 276 wins, 68 losses, 33 withdraws and 1 draw/Winning Percentage: 802%
As Yokoduna(横綱): 180 wins, 24 losses and 22 withdraws/Winning Percentage: 882%

In the era of "双葉山"(Futabayama) we had only two tournaments per year unlike these days. And it's not 15-day tournament, but 11-day or 13-day tournament.

Futabayama had the 69 winning streak which no one achieve. In that period he was, I believe, unbeatable for more than three years!
