    Decisions
    人生にはさまざまな決断がつきもの。進学先やキャリアの方向性など人生を変えるような決断に悩むことも多いが、実際には無意識に選び取った行動が大きな結果につながっていることも多くあり——。
1Think back on the most impactful decision you have made in your life. Was there much thought behind it, or was it impulsive? How dramatically did it change your life?2Recently, I heard a story on a podcast about how a teenager went snowboarding with his friends at the same spot every day for months. One morning, he decided not to join his friends as he was feeling a little tired. That decision saved his life: His friends went to their regular snow slope and were tragically killed in an avalanche.3There are countless similar stories around the world.4How many people are alive today because they missed their flight on one of the planes that hijackers crashed in the 9/11 attacks — or overslept and were late going to their office in the World Trade Center?5I have a few near-miss stories of my own. In 2002, I was in the Sari Club nightclub in Kuta, Bali, exactly one week before the bomb attacks that killed over 200 people. In 2004, I returned to Japan from a one-month trip to Sri Lanka, four days before the tsunami that wiped out many coastal regions of Southeast Asia. Those are only the near misses I’m aware of — there are likely to be many more that I don’t even know about.6Some decisions led to outcomes of a different kind. In March 2004, I went to a bar to meet some friends, and that ultimately led to me getting married and having kids. The moments leading up to me meeting my future wife happened by chance: On the way to the bathroom in the crowded bar, I bumped into an old friend who introduced me to her friend. The rest is history. But what if I had decided not to go to that bar that night at that time? Or what if I had not gone to the bathroom at that specific moment? How different would my life be right now?7We spend our lives stressing over what we consider important decisions — what to study, what schools to attend, what careers to pursue, where to live — but little do we know, some of the most impactful decisions are made without much conscious thought.8How different would your life be now if you had turned left instead of right? How different would the world be if this scientist or that inventor had died before they had made their groundbreaking discoveries? How different is the world now because a young person died before they could grow up and become a once-in-a-generation genius?9The truth is that millions of decisions collectively got you to this very point in time right now as you read this piece.
