【オンライン・アート・ヒストリー☆オムニバス】～英語で学ぶ西洋美術史講座を10月2日に開催します！
■Overcoming Adversity: Dora Maar & Miné Okubo （ドラ・マール と ミネ・オオクボ：逆境を乗り越える）
10月2日（日）/米は1日（土）に“英語で学ぶ西洋美術史”をオムニバス形式で開催します。第一部：レスリー、第二部：宮本が担当いたします。“逆境を乗り越える”をテーマに20世紀の女性アーティストの生涯と作品をみていきます。Leslie and I will talk about “Overcoming Adversity with Dora Maar and Miné Okubo,” two great female artists of the 20th century.
■(Part 1) Dora Maar - Challenging the “Modern Woman”
Dora Maar was an artist who lived for almost all the 20th century. A successful French photographer, painter and poet who influenced Pablo Picasso. She challenged the idea of the "Modern Woman" through her experimental, surrealist and dreamlike imagery. She captured the essence of England street life and brought into a unique light the struggles of society. Despite being known as Picasso's muse, Dora Maar shines through adversity with a unique talent and artistic vision that is brilliant, intelligent, cultivated, passionate, radical and fearless!
ドラ・マールは20世紀を生きたフランスの写真家、画家、詩人であり、ピカソに影響を与えたとされています。実験的かつシュルレアリスム的で夢のようなイメージを通して「モダン・ウーマン」の概念に挑戦しました。彼女はイギリスのストリートライフを捉えることにより様々な問題にスポットをあてました。ピカソのミューズとして知られていますが、知性と教養と情熱のあるドラはその独特の才能と芸術的ヴィジョンを駆使して逆境を切り抜けます。
■(Part 2) Miné Okubo and the Japanese Internment during WW2
Miné Okubo was a Japanese-American artist who was incarcerated in US War Relocation Centers during World War II, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan. She is known for depicting her personal journey of the internment through her captioned drawings. This was later published as “Citizen 13660,” a book which today acts as an important account from the perspective of an internee. How did Miné make use of her talent as an artist to survive this agonizing situation and overcome adversity? After release from the camp, how did she become an independent artist working in NYC for more than 50 years? We will discuss Miné’s extraordinary life of resilience through her internment drawings and later paintings done in NYC.
第二次世界大戦中、日本による真珠湾攻撃後に米国在住の日系人が収容所へ強制収監されました。カリフォルニア州出身の日系人アーティスト、ミネ・オオクボもその一人でした。通常であれば絶望に陥るほどの劣悪な環境でしたが、ミネは自身のアートスキルに使命を見いだし、収容所内でアートの活動を始めます。そこで描いた絵は、戦後「Citizen 13660 市民13660号」というテキスト付画集として出版されました。ミネは解放後、NYでアーティスト活動を50年以上も続けています。作品を通して彼女のレジリエンスを体感してみましょう。

アート・エデュケーター。「英語でアート」（西洋美術史、美術英語）講師、女子美術大学非常勤講師。女子美術大学付属高等学校中学校“美術英語”カリキュラム・コンサルタント。ヒューストン大学美術史学科卒（学士号）、セント・トーマス大学大学院リベラルアーツ（美術史）科卒（修士号）、ヒューストン美術館ヨーロッパ美術部門インターンシップを経て、同美術館リサーチライブラリー勤務。日米アーティストのエージェント/メディエーター。「英語でアート！」、「メンタルに効く西洋美術」（マール社）。日経“美の十選”など。
■Leslie Cuenca Profile/レスリー・クエンカ プロフィール：
Leslie Cuenca studied art and art history under the Masters of Liberal Arts program at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas USA. After graduating in 2003, she studied art throughout southern Italy, specializing in Classical art and architecture. Leslie is also a Yoga instructor, visual and performing artist - specializing in painting and dance. She teaches mindfulness and wellness programs throughout Houston at private studios, public institutions and universities.
