■To Like/ To Appreciateの違い☆
何かを好むこと=to likeは、その価値を理解すること=to appreciate とは別物。主観と客観を区別した上で作品鑑賞することを勧めますし、エデュケーターの方にはそれを生徒さんに促してほしい。アメリカの大学の美術教育ではアート専攻、実技系もヒストリーや理論系もまずはこのArt Appreciation のコースを受けることになります。アートの見方、批評の仕方を学びます。今私が教えている美大の一年生向けのクラスでは美術の基礎英語を教えながらart appreciation も入れるようにしています。
【Like / Appreciate】Being able to differentiate between “to like” and “to appreciate” could be one of the most important things when working towards being tolerant. Just because you do not like something doesn’t mean you cannot appreciate it. =Just because someone is different and you do not feel comfortable being with them doesn’t mean you cannot accept them.
When you look at a work of art, you want to learn how to “appreciate” it. If you’re teaching art or if you are a museum guide, you want your audience to understand the reason why a work is highly recognized in the history of art, although some may personally dislike it.
It’s important for art educators to be objective rather than subjective. Although I have to confess that I am actually “both” in my classes. I would never mention an “opinion” that would be unfair to the dead artist but if I love the work.. it becomes difficult not to lavish praise it!

Yuki Miyamoto is an Art History lecturer, English through Art educator based in Tokyo. Her concept comes from educator, John Dewey “Education is not a preparation for Life, Education is Life itself.” Her vision is to encourage tolerance, perspective, diversity, empathy, through a Liberal Arts education with a focus on Art History.
Yuki has been teaching art history to adults through Art Alliance (Tokyo) for the past 15 years. She currently lectures at Art Universities in Japan and acts as an “English through Art” consultant for schools aiming to transform their curriculum into art-based classes.
