ルシンダ・コブリ―個展“カラー・インターヴァル”ご案内
(English follows) イギリス出身、アメリカ在住の「ルシンダ・コブリー」の個展を銀座の「ギャラリーゴトウ」で開催いたします。宮本が8年かけて温めてきた企画です。
ルシンダさんの作品は、絵画でありながら、通常の“キャンバスに絵具”というスタイルとは異なり、「ガラス」に顔料を塗り、そのガラスを何枚も重ねようやく完成に至るという手法をとる作品です。透明感と存在感を同時に醸し出す不思議な作品たち・・・彼女のテーマを一言で表すと、Translucency。ご本人も作品の雰囲気そのもので、ちょっぴり控えめな、その優しさと人柄の良さが表情ににじみ出ている女性。
オープニングにはルシンダさんも来日、開期中作品の販売もございます。アーティスト本人から直接作品に込めた思いを聞き、お気に入りのオリジナル作品を入手する絶好の機会！26日には“アーティスト・トーク”もございますので、ぜひお越し下さい！

Lucinda Cobley’s “Colour Intervals”
We are pleased to announce that Lucinda Cobley will be having a solo exhibition @ Gallery Goto, Ginza, Tokyo Feb/March 2017!
Lucinda was born in Birmingham U.K. in 1963. In 1985 she graduated with a BA (Hons) Glass Design from North Staffordshire Polytechnic followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in Illustration from Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of Arts, London in 1993. Currently resident in the U.S. she lives in Houston, Texas. Her practice encompasses painting, printmaking and sculptural installation.

Colour Intervals カラー・インターヴァル / ステートメント
Lucinda Cobley’s reductive paintings may be perceived as a visual form of poetry. Colour, light and shadow are integral to the work both as subject and material. The paintings are made on layers of material including glass, acrylic, polyester and vellum. Painted bands and blocks of colour appear to float and overlap on different translucent planes. The colors are referenced from a myriad of experiences; some are direct observations made from local surroundings while others may be recalled from objects or places once seen. Shifts in value and intensity reflect sequential changes in colour, light and shadow through the day. Each painting title is a specific time of day meant to define the moment when observation and memory coincide.
ルシンダ・コブリ―の無駄をそぎ落とした絵は、詩を視覚化した形態として認識され得る。色・光・影は、主題や素材として作品に不可欠である。ガラス・アクリル・ポリエステル・ベラムを含む素材の幾重もの層上に、絵は作り出されている。異なる半透明の平面上に、彩られた筋と集塊が、浮かび上がり重なり合う様に現れてくる。色彩は幾多の経験から引き出される；身近な環境下、直接観察される色彩がある一方で、かつて見たことがある物や場所から想起される色彩もあろう。光の明暗・強弱の変化は、一日を通した色・光・影の留めど無い移ろいを映し出す。各々の作品名は、観察と記憶が一体化する瞬間を鮮明にする為、一日の特定の時間とした。

【プロフィール】
ルシンダ・コブリーは1963年、英国のバーミンガム生まれ。1985年、ノース・スタッフォード・ポリテクニックのガラスデザイン科を卒業（BA）し、1993年にユニバーシティ・オブ・アーツ（ロンドン）のセント・マーチンズ・カレッジ・オブ・アート＆デザインでイラストレーションを学び、大学院を修了。現在、米国テキサス州ヒューストンに在住。彼女の制作活動は絵画、版画、そして彫刻的なインスタレーションにまで及ぶ。プリントマターズ＆バーニング・ボーンズ・プレス会員のコブリーは、ヒューストンのアート・リーグで絵画とドローイングを教えている。
ルシンダ・コブリーの作品は抽象に属し、還元的である。フラットなエッジの道具やスポンジ、ブラシなどで、油絵具やアクリル絵具を塗ったり削ったりすることで造形されるそれら作品は、透明ガラス、羊皮紙、プラスチックなどが幾重にも層をなし、組み合わされている。個々の作品はフレームに収められ、一直線かグリッドのような形態で連続またはグループ分けして配置される。色の関係性が、観る者の物理的な動きと連携した光の微かな屈折を通して認識され、ときにわずかに見える半透明の各層は、輝かしい色の相互作用を露わにし、マーキングのプロセスをさらけ出している。絵具はアラバスター、緑青、大理石の粉などの鉱物と顔料を合成し、製造したものであり、テクスチャーに富むその絵具が半透明の素材に塗られると、瞑想的な透明性に変わる光と影を映す。
作品はロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アート（ロンドン）、コーパス・クリスティ美術館、アート・リーグ・ヒューストン、スミスタウン・タウンシップ・アーツ・カウンシル（ニューヨーク）、プロテウス・ゴワナス・ニューヨーク、テキサス大学（サン・アントニオ）、イスリップ美術館、シエナ・アート・インスティテュート（イタリア）、ヒューストン美術館、版画史美術館（ヒューストン）、マスア美術館（ルイジアナ州モンロー）、ヒューストン・ダウンタウン大学などで展示されてきた。ルシンダ・コブリーの仕事は『イラストレーター協会が選ぶ20点』（英国）他の出版物で特集され、パリッシュ・ミュージアム・ニューヨーク館長、テリー・サルタンによる「ニュー・アメリカン・ペインティング」（84号）の掲載作家に選ばれている。彼女はテキサス州ヒューストンのグレイ・コンテンポラリーの契約作家。

A member of PrintMatters and Burning Bones Press she also teaches painting and drawing at The Art League in Houston.
Lucinda Cobley’s work is abstract and reductive. Formed by applying and removing oil or acrylic paint with flat edged implements, sponges and brushes they are assembled from multiple layers of translucent glass, vellum or plastic. The individual works are assembled into frames and arranged in sequences or groupings following linear or grid formations. Color relationships become discernable through subtle refractions of light in tandem with physical movements made by the viewer. Sometimes barely visible, each translucent layer reveals luminous color interactions and exposes the history of the mark-making process. The paints are made from a combination of minerals and pigments such as alabaster, malachite or marble dust and when applied onto the semi-transparent materials, the textured paint, reflects light and shadows that resolve into meditative translucence.
Venues for work exhibited include The Royal College of Art London, Corpus Christie Art Museum, Art League Houston, Smithtown Township Arts Council, New York, Proteus Gowanus New York, University of Texas at San Antonio, Islip Art Museum, Siena Art Institute, Italy, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Museum of Printing History, Houston, the Masur Museum of Art, Monroe, Louisiana and the University of Houston Downtown. Lucinda Cobley’s work has been featured in juried publications including ‘Images 20 by The Association of Illustrators’ in the UK and selected by Terrie Sultan Director of the Parrish Museum New York for ‘New American Painting Issue #84’. She exhibits with Gray Contemporary, Houston, Texas.
