前回と本日ＵＰの作品はアメリカの
アグネス・マーティンのものです。
ヒューストン時代に出会ったマーティンの
作品、、特に2002年にMenil Collection
美術館にて行われた彼女の個展を
体験して以来、ファンになりました。
色と線だけでこんなにも癒されるのか。。
マーティンの作品はほとんどこのような
水平線(horizontal line)と淡い色彩で成り立って
います。
きっと初めてマーティンの作品をご覧に
なられる方は“ふーむむ、ただの線ではないか～”
と思われるかもしれません。
でも実際の作品を目の前にすると、なんだか
心が癒され、私たちをやさしい気持ちに
させてくれます。
それもこの水平線にこの色彩のコンビネーション
であるからそう感じるのであって、では、水平線
ではなく垂直線(vertical line)だとどうなるのでしょうか。
また違った感覚を受けると思います。
水平線の力ってすごいな～。。
心の平静、静けさ、冷静を感じるのに対し、
垂直線だと、不安や当惑を感じてしまいます。
現代アートってこのようにいろいろな感じ方が
できるので楽しいな～と思います。
また２０世紀以前の西洋美術とは違った
見方ができるのが面白い。
今年はお教室を通して現代アートにも
皆さんに親しんでもらえるようにいろいろな場を
設けたいと思います。
I first experienced Agnes Martin’s work
during my stay in
time when I visited her exhibition at the Menil
Collection in 2002. The gracious impact that
I had received surrounded by her giant canvases
that depict nothing but horizontal lines and
color fields! I immediately fell in love with
her lines and soft, subtle colors. The calm
emotional and spiritual experience of the horizontal
line is something close to meditation.
Edward Hirsch writes about Agnes Martin in his
prose – the following is only a section of it :
If only she could picture
The boundlessness of God drawing
An invisible thread through the starry spaces
If only she could paint
The horizon without limits
A horizontal line is a pilgrimage
A segment of devotion wrested from time
An infinitely gentle mark on a blank page
The stripe remains after everything else is gone
It is a wisp of praise with a human hand
It is singing on a bare canvas
