Green Bay Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Erik Walden was released on
$1,000 signature bond following his court appearance Monday via teleconference
from Brown County Jail.
District Attorney John Zakowski said there is not enough information yet to
issue a criminal complaint. Another hearing is set for Dec. Walden had been
arrested Friday morning on suspicion of felony substantial battery with a
domestic violence enhancer.
Zakowski indicated Monday that the accuser's account of the incident had
changed. According to him, she said she hit Walden first and that he was
defending himself. The accuser, Walden's livein girlfriend, received four
stitches to her forehead at a hospital after hitting her head on the bedpost and
also injured her thumb, he said.
"The question is really, who is the primary physical aggressor," Zakowski
said to reporters afterward. "If this is a case where it's an argument where she
struck him and he pushed her away, there's no charge. If it's a case where
they're arguing and he pushes her, initiates the contact and that causes injury
then it's a different situation. That's what we have to try to piece together
from these varying statements that were given to law enforcement as well as to
the hospital."
Walden, who has been in jail since Friday morning, appeared in an orange
jumpsuit via teleconference for the hearing. His girlfriend's initial story to
police implied that Walden had pushed her. Later accounts by her, Zakowski said,
indicate that she attacked him first and he was defending himself when her head
hit the bedpost. Investigators are unsure if she is telling the truth. wholesale jerseys
Zakowski said these inconsistencies are common in domestic violence cases. At
their Scheuring Road apartment near Green Bay, the two were in an argument over
Walden's decision to leave town the next day, he said. The linebacker planned on
going back to Georgia. To his knowledge, alcohol was not involved.

"It may be she says she never really did change her story, that is what she

process of looking at that as well. In domestic violence, many times there's an
incident and then after the initial shock or pain subsides then there's the
realization that we just want to make it go away. This is someone who's a
breadwinner, this is someone who they've been with a number of years. There's a
number of reasons why that can happen."
Walden was ordered not to have any contact with his girlfriend by a court
commissioner.

A caveat, I don't condone domestic violence and Walden may or may not be
guilty of such. With that said, from the account I've read his girlfriend hasn't
changed her story:

"Following the arrest, Walden girlfriend claimed the incident was a
misunderstanding, according to NBC26.
Instead, she claimed the pair had been arguing when she tripped and hit her
head on the bed.
She said it was hospital staff who alerted police.
To make a long story short, its not clear from various media reports as to
who actually reported the incident. I do know from media reports that Mr. Bani
stated that the he was given his info by the arresting officer.
It seems pretty clear that at this point she doesn't want to press charges
and I fully concede that she could be motivated to not press charges even if she
was a legitimate victim of violence. I don't know her, I don't know him, so I'm
not going to speculate on that. Looks to me that this is going to be a hard case
to make without her testimony.
