At my second weekend in LA, I went to Dodger Stadium (alone…). You know, Dodger Stadium is a home stadium of Los Angels Dodgers, a famous Major League Baseball Team. It is located on the northan hill of Los Angels.
I had to get a Taxi at Union Station, because there is no public transportation to the stadium. But there seems to be no complain from people, they just go to Stadium by their cars and park at very wide lots around the stadium.
In Japanese sense, it is unbelievable. In my experience, the way to go and back from stadium in a crowded train is happy. On the way I talk not only with my friends or family but also with not-acknowledged people on the game of the day. After Hanshin Tigers’s Victory, people are still singing team songs in the Hanshin Railway(It is not irregular, but it is normal style in European soccer towns). After all, what I want to say is that shareing a room with fans are very good experience in professional sports.
Considering the history of Japanese professional baseball history, many railway companies has been (or had been) holding teams to activate their rail-side cities.(For example, Hanshin, Seibu, Kintetsu, Hankyu, Nankai and so on.) Therefore, many stadiums are built beside their lines so that many people can go to stadium by the train.
It is also not good for handicapped people, so if I were a mayor of Los Angels, my first direction will be a settlement of bus line to the Stadium.
When I arrived at the beautiful stadium, it was a time to sing national anthem. Music with full of proud wraps the audience and stadium, flows into beautiful twilight sky. It was really beautiful and moving moment for me.
Game between Dodgers and Pirates goes on, but I don’t know any players’ name (only Garciapala ). Japanese say that the audience in Major League knows baseball and how to appriciate it very much. It is true in a sense. There are no “Ouendan” in Japanese who continuously claps, sings and shouts players’ names. But they sometimes make fun without baseball. Many waves occurs without concerning the game. It may disturb players’ concentration, I think. And they bring many beachballs in the stadium and throw, toss and have fun for themselves. There is always a ball anywhere in the stadium. At last, a middle-aged woman shouted “Who’s watching the game! ”, everyone around laughed.
I ate “Dodger Dog”, which is said to be the best hot dog in Major League and watching the game. At the end of 8th inning(Dodgers2-3Pirates ), I decided to go out, because if I go out later, I may miss a taxi.
But drama has begun at the moment. At the top of 9th inning, Dodgers sent Takashi Saito, a Japanese pitcher. And, they equalized the game at the bottom. Finally they got four runs(homerun) in 12th inning and won very dramatically. It was at the hotel I noticed the dramatic result. Alas! I missed all the essence of the game.
After all, it is my first experience in Major League. I want to see more games and more sorts of sports, football, basketball, ice hockey and soccer, my most favorite.
I want to say it was a splendid experience, but it’s a pity I cannot say so.
