4/29/21 - First Time Teaching a Russian | Student's Blog

Student's Blog

Notes which I just copied and pasted from the internet and my personal notes.

From 1-2PM, I was teaching my new student who is a Russian. Her name is Mary. Her brother, Misha, whom I met from Interpals said that she would learn English from me. She is 19 years old and she already has a boyfriend. She is a university student and she is studying Philology. She also studies German (wow) (Is it common among Russians to study German?). She said she also would like to have an online course for English (I guess she wants to have online school). She said she studies English everyday and she wants to learn English because it's a beautiful language. While she talked about all of this, I was so conscious about the time because it was already 14 minutes and we didnt start the lesson yet. I should have been more focused on the conversation because it was getting to know each other. But I stuck with the lesson I made, afraid that it may be of no use. Free conversation is nice too. I think I should have allotted more time for free conversation so that she can practise, and likewise I too. In my opinion, when compared to me, she was not so quick in creating or constructing a sentence everytime I asked her so. And she kept on following the answer on the screen without exactly knowing the reason behind so. She needs to improve a lot her knowledge about grammar. Also, she speaks English slow (because I speak English fast). Nevertheless, it will not hinder me from helping her advance her English!

She didnt know at first the following words:

Remain, which, that, flourishes, web, deaf, setbacks, Cabinet, acknowledge, foundation, abundance, flood, deter, invisible, standing ovation, incompetent, presumed, illuminate, necessity, escort, hailing distance, assignment, subscription, expenses.

She also has confusion between a shopping center and a mall. I told her that shopping center is large while shopping center is smaller. XD I hope I was right. lol

Next time, I should recommend to her to type her sentences so that we could record her progress.
