次に挙げますのは、訳者が自分の希望的解釈を加えて大胆に意訳したものです。
この訳はちょっとわかりやすすぎますが、実はあたしも、本当はこういう歌なんじゃないかと昔から思っています。つまり、エリナ・リグビーとマッケンジー神父の老いらくの恋の歌なのでは？男女の境を超えた信仰者としての二人の魂の結びつき、プラトニックな情愛を描いたものなのでは？と。
蛇足なようですが一応言いますと、エリナ・リグビーがオールドミスであることには疑念の余地はないと思いますが、老いた聖職者は「マッケンジー牧師」ではなくて「マッケンジー神父」であることにご留意下さい。プロテスタントの牧師と違って、カトリックの神父は一生独身を守らなくてはならないのです。
