Gary Kubiak, who led the Houston Texans to back to back AFC South division
titles and the franchise's only two playoff victories but stumbled to 11
straight losses and a 2 11 record this year, was fired on Friday.
The decision was announced by owner Bob McNair hours after the team's 27 20
loss at Jacksonville a final straw in a season that started with Super Bowl
aspirations but has resulted in the worst record in the NFL.
Thursday night's defeat gave the Texans their longest losing streak in the
franchise 12 year history and matched the longest in Houston's pro football
history, tying the Oilers (1972, 1994) for that dubious distinction.

The Texans' downfall this season began in the third game at Baltimore, where

in the fourth quarter, against Seattle.
The Texans had pushed the Seahawks all over Reliant Stadium for three
quarters, leading 20 3, but quarterback Matt Schaub threw a pick six in his
second consecutive game. Cornerback Richard Sherman's return tied the score,
forcing overtime. The Seahawks won 23 20, and the Texans never recovered.
Last season, the Texans were 5 0 in one score games. They began this season 2
0. Then they couldn't win close games, losing the most recent seven games by a

Until this season, offense was the hallmark of Kubiak's teams. They placed
seven offensive players in the Pro Bowl last season, including Schaub. This year

replace Dom Capers.
Capers, the Texans' first coach, lasted four seasons. He was fired after the
team finished a league worst 2 14 in 2005.
