今日は、九州の有力なビジネスリーダーで構成される福岡の「正論懇話会」に招かれて、講演しました。
Today I spoke to the Seiron Konwa-kai in Fukuoka, comprised of leading influential members of the local business community in Kyushu.
テーマは、“素晴らしい日本”でした。そこで、日本はアメリカで一番人気の外国であることを話しました。
The theme was “Wonderful Japan,” and I spoke about how Japan is the most popular foreign country in the United States.
さらに、日本は文明国のイメージがあります。東北大震災後の日本人の規律正しい行動や、サッカーのワールドカップで日本は負けたのに、日本のサポーターが試合後に観客席（自分たちの席だけでなく負けた相手の席も）のゴミを片付けていたことなど、外伝で取り上げられた日本の話をいくつか紹介しました。それらのことは世界的に見たら普通ではないのに、日本では普通であることを指摘しました。
In addition, Japan has the image of a very civilized country. I gave several good examples which have been covered in the foreign press, such as the orderly conduct of the Japanese populace after the Tohoku Earthquake and the fact that after losing in the soccer world cup, the Japanese fans cleaned up around their seats and the seats of the rival team. I pointed out that while such conduct is not considered normal internationally, it is normal in Japan.
それから、戦後の日本の誠意ある国際貢献が評価されていることについて話しました。ＯＤＡだけではなく、日本企業が外国に拠点を置くときも、地元の社会に貢献することが評価されてるのです。
I also talked about how the post-war Japanese overseas assistance has led to a high regard for Japan. Not just ODA, but also the fact that Japanese companies contribute to the local community when setting up business abroad.
日本は、「成熟した民主主義国家として信頼できる国」というイメージができているおかげで、安倍総理の訪米が成功裡に終わったことも指摘しました。
Japan has made an image for itself of a mature democracy which can be trusted, which is probably the reason that Prime Minister Abe’s trip to the United States was such a success.
アメリカで安倍総理が約束した二つのこと、つまりＴＴＰの合意と安保法案の可決を見事に果たしたことは、日本への更なる信頼につながるという意見も述べました。。
I stated my opinion that the fact that Prime Minister Abe made good on the two promises he made in the U.S., namely agreement on TPP and passage of the national security bills, will lead to further trust in Japan.
質疑応答の時間になり、「１０年後の日本はどうなっていますか？」と聞かれました。このような質問は初めてだったのでびっくりしましたが、「１０年後には憲法の改正が終わり、もっと自立した国家になっていること。そして、沖縄も平静を取り戻していることを期待している」と答えました。
During the question and answer session, I was asked what I thought Japan would be like in 10 years. This was the first time I have received such a question so I was somewhat taken aback, but I answered that I hope that in 10 years Japan will have been able to amend the constitution and become a more self-reliant country, and that the situation in Okinawa will have settled down.
一部の日本人が、変な政治思想に囚われて、間違った政策を主張している中で、日本の真のリーダーの大多数は現実をしっかりと把握していて、真剣に日本の平和的な繁栄と進歩に取り組んでいることを見て、安心しました。
I was gratified to see that, while there is a segment of the Japanese population which is caught up in strange political philosophies and advocates mistaken policies, the majority of the real leaders in Japan have a firm grasp of reality and a sincere commitment to the peaceful prosperity and progress of their country.
