アラスカは、全米５０州の中でも最も面積が大きい州です。横幅は西海岸のサンフランシスコから東海岸のフロリダ州までの距離で、南北にはほぼカナダとメキシコの間の長さです。
Alaska is the largest of the 50 states of America. Its width stretches the equivalent of the distance between San Francisco on the West Coast and Florida on the East Coast. From north to south, it is almost as long as the distance between Canada and Mexico.

１８６７年、米国はロシアからアラスカを７２０万ドル（今日のレートだとおよそ８億円）で購入しました。当時の世論では「高すぎる」と言う人もいましたが、１９３５年には、米国の飛行家であり将軍、軍事における空軍力の初期段階の主唱者であった Billy Mitchell （1879年－1936年）が、「アラスカは世界で最も戦略的に重要な軍事拠点である」と言い、続けて、「アラスカを支配する国は世界を支配する」と宣言しました。
The United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for 7.2 million dollars (about 800,000,000 yen in today’s money). Public opinion largely considered it a waste of money, but in 1935 United States Army General Billy Mitchell (United States aviator and general who was an early advocate of military air power (1879-1936)) called Alaska the most important strategic military location in the world, saying whoever holds Alaska will hold the world.
私達は赤道を真ん中に置いた世界地図を見慣れていますが、実は地球を「上」から見ると大変重要なことが分かります。アラスカのアンカレッジ空港から、ジェット機は９時間以内に世界中の先進国の９０％に着きます。お陰で航空貨物拠点として注目されていて、通過する貨物量は世界２～３位です。UPSもFedExも国際本部はアンカレッジに置いています。
We are accustomed to looking at maps with the equator in the center, but if you view the world from the top you find something very important. From the airport in Anchorage, Alaska, a jet can reach 90% of the industrialized world within nine hours. This airport handles the second or third largest volume of air cargo of any airport in the world. Both UPS and FedEx have their international headquarters located in Anchorage.
２０１２年現在、22,438人の米兵がアラスカに配備されています。全人口の８．２％です。なお、大人の約１５％は退役軍人（全米では１０％）です。
As of 2012, there were 22,438 service men and women stationed in Alaska, representing 8.2% of the population. In addition, almost 15% of the adults are veterans (versus 10% for the U.S. overall).
今日の冬祭りでも、私たちと一緒に、数多くの軍関係者が家族で雪像や花火を楽しんでいました。昨晩はフィギュアスケートのショーを見に行きましたが、軍関係者の入場料は２０％割引でした。今夜偶然訪れたレストランでは、２０～３０人の軍人とそのデート相手が集まっていましたが、皆きちんと制服を着ていて、実に凛々しい光景でした。言うまでもなく、「自称平和運動家」は、ここに見当たりません。
At the winter festival today, there were lots of military families enjoying the ice sculptures and fireworks along with the rest of us. We went to see the figure skating show last night where the admission for military personnel was discounted 20%. We accidentally ran into a party of 20 or 30 servicemen and their dates at a restaurant tonight. All of the servicemen were all dressed in formal uniform, and I must say it was an imposing sight. It goes without saying that there are no self-styled peace activists to be seen here.

Just for fun, I will put up a couple of pictures each of the snow sculptures and the fireworks. The snow sculptures are still being carved, with completion slated for tomorrow.
