高校時代、私はディベートチーム（弁論部）に入っていました。その活動の一つとして「模擬議会」がありました。事前に議案を書いて提出し、大会を開いてみんなでそれを議論して、最後に議決を取るのです。この活動の中で私は大変重要なことを学びました。
When I was in high school, I was on the debate team. One of our activities was mock legislature. We would write a bill and submit it in advance, and then it would be debated by the mock legislature and submitted to a vote. I learned a very important lesson from this activity.
あるとき私は、自分が提案した議案の弁論を行いました。その議案が持つ利点と合理性をとても論理的に、そして冷静に話しました。皆の心をつかもうと全力を尽くしました。
One time, I was speaking on behalf of a bill which I had written. I spoke about its benefits and logicality using very good logic, and put all my effort into seriously reaching out to the hearts of the other mock legislators.
それに対してある人が反対意見を述べました。彼は論理的な話は一切せず、ただ単に「これはダメだ！」と何度も大声で叫び続けました。
However, there was another person who spoke against my bill. He used not logic at all, but just kept saying very loudly and forcefully, “This won’t work!”
結果的に、私が出した議案は否決されました。そのとき私は、論理だけでは不十分なことを知りました。悲しいことですが論理は、大声で繰り返し叫ぶだけという表現方法に負けることがあるのです。
The result was that my bill was voted down. At that time, I realized that mere logic is not enough. Sad to say, it will lose out to repeated high volume expressions.
通常の弁論の場合は、冷静な論理の方がだいたい勝つのですが、大勢の人間に対して自分の考えを訴えるときは、声の大きさがとても重要な要素になるのです。
In a normal debate, cool logic usually wins out, but when you are appealing to a large number of people, the loudness of your voice is a very important element.

現在、安倍総理が全世界を飛び回って日本の誠意を訴えていますが、一部の日本人は批判しています。しかし私としては、上記の経験から言っても、一連の活動は非常に大事だと思います。終戦70周年のときに何らかの声明を出すようなので、その根回しにもなります。
Prime Minster Abe is presently traveling around the world presenting Japan’s position, but some Japanese have criticized him. As far as I am concerned, and judging from what I have learned, these activities are very important. The government will issue an official statement on the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, so this is preparation for that.
反日勢力の大声に負けないためにも、大切な戦略だと思います。
It is an important strategy to counter the almost deafening voices of Japan’s opponents.
