支那（シナ）という言葉について(二カ国語) Regarding Use of the Term “Shina” for China (Bilingual)

その理由は、やっと論理的な反対意見が出てきたからです。かつてＴＢＳのサンデーモーニングにレギュラー出演していたとき、私が少し大胆な発言をすると、放送後のテレビ局には賛否両論の電話が殺到したのですが、賛成と反対の比率が１：１くらいになるくらいが丁度良いと私は考えていました。
The reason is because finally some people posted logical opposing opinions. Years ago I was a regular on the live TBS television show “Sunday Morning.” When I would make some bold statement, the TV station would receive a number of calls both in support and opposition to my opinion. I always thought that the best proportion of such calls should be about 1:1.
実は、私の最近の「日本の保守寄り」の記事に対しては、反対意見が少なすぎると考えていました。いわゆる「左派」からの冷静かつ論理的な反対意見が、もっと出ることを期待していたのです。ところが残念なことに「こんなバカだとは思わなかった」といった感情的な意見や、反日プロパガンダに完全に操られたステレオタイプな反対意見しかありませんでした。中には私の投稿をちゃんと読んでいないと思われる意見もありました。
In response to my recent series of somewhat conservative-leaning articles, I have been disappointed at the small number of people expressing opposing opinions. I had been hoping for a larger number of calmly presented, logical left-leaning opinions. Instead, unfortunately what we have seen is emotional outbursts such as “I didn’t think you were such an idiot,” or stereotypical opposing comments completely manipulated by anti-Japanese propaganda. In many cases, it was clear that the writer had not actually read my posting.
昨日も、私の発言趣旨を勘違いした人（ちゃんと読んでいない人）の反対意見が見られたので、少しだけ反論しておきます。まず私は「中国と呼ぶべき」とは一言も言っていませんし、全く考えてもいません。私が書いていない話を脳内で合成して、ツイッター等へ無責任に書き込む人には猛省を促します。一次情報を確認せずにリツイートした人も同様です。
Regarding my posting yesterday, there were several opposing opinions from people who completely misunderstood the meaning of what I said, so I am going to engage in just a little bit of counterargument here. First, I did not say once that “China should be called ‘Chuugoku’”, and in fact I don’t think that at all. You people who conjure up things that are not written in the posting and then irresponsibly spread them on Twitter, I urge you to reflect seriously on what you are doing. People who retweet without checking the original content are equally to blame.
もちろん「支那」という言葉が古くから使われていたことも私は理解しています。世界的には「シナ」の発音が何の問題もなく使われていることも知っています。支那そばや東シナ海のような言葉の使用には何の問題も感じません。そしてこの問題が、例によって日本だけを対象にした彼の国の難癖から発生していることも分かっています。
Of course I know that the word “Shina” has been used since ancient times. I also know that it sounds much like the words for “China” in various other languages, which are used without any problem whatsoever. I see no problem in using the term in words such as “Shina Soba” [ramen] or “Higashi Shina-Kai” [the East China Sea]. I also understand that, as usual, this issue arises as a result of criticism from that country aimed only at Japan.
私が問題視しているのは、日本人がわざわざ「支那」の言葉を使うと、彼の国の行動や政策、国家体制を批判する本題を議論する以前に、「差別論」という余計な争点が発生してしまう点です。実際に、保守派と考えられる多くの日本人が、ＳＮＳやブログ等で、差別的なニュアンスを込めて「支那」という言葉を使っています。これは相手の思う壺だと思います。
But the problem I see here is this. When Japanese go out of their way to use the term “Shina,” before they can discuss the main topic, which is criticism of actions, policies, or the national polity of that country, a wholly unnecessary and touchy issue of “discrimination” is created. The fact is that many so-called conservative Japanese people use the term “Shina” intentionally as a derisive term on SNS, blogs, etc. This plays right into the hands of that country.
私はストレートに、政策批判などの本題に入りたいので、「支那」という言葉を使うことで生じる不必要な「差別論」に引きずり込まれるデメリットを回避したいと考えています。「中国と呼びたくない気持ちは理解できるけど、支那じゃなくてチャイナやＰＲＣと言えば、差別論に持ち込まれることを避けられるよ」と書いたつもりなのですが、私の文章が下手くそでしたか？
I always want to get straight to the matter of policies and other things which I want to discuss, so I want to avoid the demerits of being dragged into an unnecessary and petty discussion of alleged discrimination. Yesterday I wrote: “I would like to suggest that in order to avoid unnecessary controversy and misunderstanding such people use either the word “China” in katakana [チャイナ] or “PRC” [People’s Republic of China].” Was this sentence too poorly written to be understood properly?
「難癖だと分かっているのに日本が折れることにデメリットがある」という主張は理解できます。きっと「私のような妥協的な態度こそが、相手の思う壺だ」と言いたいのでしょう。しかし、ここまでにあった反対意見を全部読んでみても、今のところ私の意見は変わりません。「支那」という単語をあえて使うメリットが、私の考えるデメリットよりも大きいとは思えないからです。
I can understand the assertion that “there are demerits in Japan’s acceding to [that country’s] criticism. What you want to say is that “Kent’s attitude of compromise plays into the other country’s hands,” right? However, after having read all the opposing arguments in the comments on yesterday’s posting, as of now I have not changed my opinion. I cannot see how the merits of using the term “Shina” can be greater than the demerits I have just explained.
そして、この点が重要なのですが、日本という国を大切にしたいと考える人間同士であっても、考えや主張が100％一致することはあり得ません。それを求めるのは「全体主義者」です。自分の意見とは一部違う人がいた時、その人を全否定する人がよくいますが、全く馬鹿げています。
Let me make one more very important point. It is a complete impossibility for the opinions and assertions of all the people who value Japan highly to be 100% identical. People who seek that result are preaching “totalitarianism.” We often see people who wholly reject the opinions of people whose opinions are only partly different from their own. This is totally ridiculous.

明らかに保守派である「味方」に対して、そのような狭量な態度を取るのは、過激派の「内ゲバ」と同じです。そこは意識して修正しないと、無意識に左傾化してしまった「日本を取り戻す」ことなど、永遠に不可能だと思います。
Such a narrow-minded attitude toward fellow conservatives is the same as the internal strife of extremist groups. Japan has slipped into a somewhat left-leaning posture which it will be impossible to correct without consciously correcting this narrow-minded attitude.
