Is it Christmas season already?
11月23日は勤労感謝の日ですね。これは通常Labor Thanksgiving Dayと英訳しますが、少し奇妙な感じがします。アメリカでは9月第１月曜日がLabor Dayです。本来ならこれにあたるのですが、労働組合の色合いが濃くて、アメリカ版「メーデー」のような日です。ですからLabor Dayと翻訳しては誤解を招きます。
On November 23rd, there is Japanese national holiday called “Labor Thanksgiving Day,” which sounds a little bit funny in English. In the U.S. we have Labor Day, which is on the first Monday of September, but it is more like May Day in Japan. Thus, we cannot translate the name of the Japanese holiday as “Labor Day” without creating misunderstandings.
さて、アメリカにはThanksgiving Day（感謝祭）があります。勤労感謝の日と同じ週（11月第4木曜日）に行われます。しかし、これは全ての恵みに対して神に感謝するという意味なので、何ら「勤労」には関係ありません。このように適切な英語表現がないため、仕方なく直訳しています。
In the United States we have Thanksgiving Day, too, which falls on the fourth Thursday, in the same week as this Japanese holiday. The thrust of this holiday is to give thanks to God for all our blessings, and it has no particular tie-in to “labor.” Thus, we cannot translate the name of the Japanese holiday as “Thanksgiving Day” either.

アメリカでは、Thanksgiving Day（11月第4木曜日）の翌日からクリスマスシーズンが本番に入ります。しかし、日本ではもっと早くから始まっています。昨日からＵＳＪの有名なクリスマスツリーがライトアップされています。ギネス記録を持っていますね。
In the United States, Christmas season moves into full swing on the day after Thanksgiving Day, but in Japan it starts much earlier. The giant Christmas tree at Universal Studios Japan turned its lights on yesterday. By the way, this tree holds the Guiness world record for the most lights on an artificial tree!

一昨日の夜、息子の家族が渋谷の外資系ステーキレストランに食べに行くと、子供たち（私の孫）は既にＢＧＭがクリスマス音楽になっていたので驚きました。お母さん（息子の嫁）は、「確かに私たちは感謝祭の翌日からクリスマス音楽を流したり、飾り付けの電源を入れたり、プレゼントの買い物を始めるけれども、日本に感謝祭がないので、ハロウィーンが終わったころから徐々にクリスマスのシーズンが始まるのよ」と説明しました。
The night before last, my son’s family went to eat at a famous steak restaurant in Shibuya. His children (my grandchildren) were surprised that the restaurant was already playing Christmas songs for background music. Their mother (my daughter-in-law) explained to them that we start playing Christmas music, turn on the lights, and get serious about shopping for presents starting the day after Thanksgiving, but since there is no Thanksgiving Day in Japan, people start getting excited about Christmas soon after Halloween.

When the music starts this early, by the time Christmas rolls around I am sick of hearing Christmas music all over town. I have one special request this year for the people in charge of choosing the music: Please, please, please don’t play “White Christmas!” It will save me from going into a bad mood.
