中間選挙の結果、米下院カリフォルニア州第17選挙区のマイク・ホンダ氏は、８期目の当選を果たしました。結局、米国内の巨大反日組織は彼を裏切らなかったのでしょうか。もしかすると危機感を抱いた彼の方から、今まで以上に魂を売り渡す約束を持ちかけたのかも知れませんね。
The midterm election results are in, and Mike Honda has won his 8th election to the House of Representatives from California District 17. Maybe the large anti-Japanese element did not desert him. Or, feeling a sense of impending crisis, he may have sold his soul and offered them more promises.

少し残念に思う反面、最近はいわゆる「従軍慰安婦問題」に関する米国内の世論の風向きが変わりつつあるように感じるので、ホンダ氏が現職下院議員の任期中に「全部嘘でした！」とバレて恥をかくという、最大の苦汁を舐めてもらうチャンスが生まれたとも言えます。
The win may be unfortunate, but on the other hand the direction of public opinion regarding the “comfort women issue” seems to have shifted in the U.S., so it very well may be that the truth will come out during Honda’s term of office, causing him deep embarrassment.

さて今後、私がもう一つ注目している選挙戦は沖縄県知事選です。私の勝手な推測ですが、多くの日本人は沖縄について「日本最南端にあるリゾートの島」とか、「米軍基地が集まった県」という程度のイメージしかもっていないように思います。多少知っている人でも、普天間基地を辺野古に移設する話がこじれている問題とか、米軍基地への反対運動がたびたび行われているという話を、ニュースで聞く程度ではないでしょうか。

Another election which I have been following is the race for governor of Okinawa, which is about to take place. I have a feeling that a large number of mainland Japanese think only of Okinawa as “a resort island at the southern tip of Japan” or “a prefecture with lots of military bases.” Even more slightly informed people may only have heard on the news about the Futenma Base being moved to Henoko, or that there are frequent protests against U.S. military bases.

日本人はもっと沖縄の問題に関心を持つべきだと私は常々考えています。「他国に魂を売り渡す」という意味では、こちらの某候補者もかなり問題なのです。「沖縄の独立」を考えているのだそうです。沖縄はもともと「琉球王国」という独立国家だったのだから、日本政府から独立して、米軍基地も完全撤退させたいと考えていると聞きます。
I think all the time that Japanese people should have more interest in the problems of Okinawa. Returning to the matter of political candidates selling their souls, a certain candidate for governor (whom we shall leave unnamed) wants to have Okinawa secede from Japan. Okinawa was originally the Kingdom of the Ryukyus, an independent country, so I hear he is thinking of declaring independence from Japan and expelling all of the U.S. military bases.

私は1975年に開催された沖縄海洋博覧会の時に、米政府の臨時外交職員として沖縄に７か月間住んだことがあります。また、最近の投稿を読んで頂ければわかるように、沖縄には年に何度も仕事で出張しますから、沖縄在住の友人もたくさんいます。それだけでなく私はアメリカ人なので、米軍基地関係者にもたくさん知り合いがいます。恐らく私は大半の「本土在住の日本人」よりも、沖縄に対する思い入れが強いですし、知識もそれなりにあると思います。
When the Okinawa Ocean Expo was held in 1975, I lived in Okinawa for 7 months and worked as a temporary foreign service staff officer for the U.S. government. In addition, as you will know if you have been reading my blog recently, I go on business trips to Okinawa several times each year and know a large number of people who live there. Not only that, since I am an American, I know many people associated with the U.S. military bases. I probably have deeper feelings for Okinawa than the majority of mainland Japanese people, and I think I am very well-informed about Okinawan issues.

For that reason, I’m afraid if I start talking about Okinawa in too much detail I won’t be able to stop, so today I would like to share just a few bits of data.
・The United States governed Okinawa directly from the end of World War II until May 15, 1972, when Okinawa was “reunited” with mainland Japan.
・18% of the land area of Okinawa is being used as bases for the U.S. military stationed in Japan
・As a proportion of land area, 74.7% of U.S. military facilities in Japan are located in Japan.
これらのデータを見て「どうして？」と疑問に思いますか？ 私は米政府や米軍がそうしたのは当然だと考えています。終戦間際、旧日本軍は沖縄を必死に守ろうとしました。神風特攻隊の大半は沖縄戦に向けて出撃しましたし、戦艦大和も沖縄戦で沈没しました。その理由はただ一つ。米軍が沖縄を手に入れたら、日本の敗北が確定すると理解していたからです。
Do you not wonder why this is so? I think it was very logical and inevitable that the U.S. government and U.S. military would do this. As the end of World War II drew near, the Japanese military fought desperately to defend the Okinawa. The majority of kamikaze dive bomber pilots embarked on missions for Okinawa, and the Battleship Yamato was sunk during the Battle of Okinawa. There is just one reason for this. That is because the Japanese military understood that if the U.S. military took control of Okinawa, defeat of the Japanese military would be ensured.

During the war, Okinawa was the most strategic place for both countries. As a result, the battle was fierce, and an enormous number of human lives were sacrificed. 70 years after the end of the war, the strategic importance of this place to both Japan and the United States has not changed at all. No, it’s probably more correct to state the strategic importance is greater than ever. Stuck in 20th Century mentality, a certain hegemonistic country arriving late as a world power clearly has designs on Okinawa.

もし私が米大統領であれば、沖縄が「某国」に奪われそうになった場合は、日米同盟の下で間違いなく集団的自衛権を発動して、「某国」を躊躇なく先制攻撃します。
