Halloween Just around the Corner!
私と同じく東京に住む次男の一家は、ハロウィンを目前に準備万端のようです。
Just like me, my son's house in Tokyo is all set up for Halloween.
子供の頃、私も仮装してお菓子をもらいに近所の家を周りましたが、本当に楽しかった記憶があります。１年に一度の大好きなお祭りでした。あれから約半世紀が経過して、今では孫たちにお菓子をあげる側になりました。
When I was a child, I dressed up and went around the neighborhood begging for candy. I remember that it was loads of fun. I loved this yearly event. A half century has now passed, so now I am in the position of providing the candy for my grandkids and the other children.
ご存知の通り、子供たちは"Trick or Treat!"、つまり「お菓子をくれなきゃイタズラするぞ！」と叫びながらご近所を周ります。実際には、お菓子を貰えなくても本当にイタズラをする子供はほとんどいないと思います。
As our English readers undoubtedly know, the children go around the neighborhood shouting "Trick or Treat!", which means, "give me a treat or I will perpetrate some kind of mischief on you." Of course, even if the children don't get any candy (such as if the family is not home, etc.), almost no one engages in mischief.
ところが、私の妻は毎年ユタの家で、まず外の照明をハロウィン仕様に変更してお化け屋敷みたいな雰囲気にします。さらに家の外に向けてスピーカーから恐い音を流した上で、入口の両側に魔女の大釜を設置して、たき火を燃やします。仕上げに妻は魔女の衣装を着込んで待ち構え、"Trick or Treat!"と叫ぶ子供たちに、こっちからイタズラするのを楽しんでいます。
At our house in the Utah, we change the outside lighting to Halloween mode, which makes the place look like a haunted house. We run scary music through speakers from the basement windows and light bonfires in cauldrons on both sides of the front porch, and my wife dresses up like a really scary witch. In other words, it is us perpetrating mischief on the children.
あまりにも怖い雰囲気なので、我が家の玄関に近づけない子供もいます。小さい子供が泣き出すこともありますが、少し大きい子供たちは大喜びします。
Some children are so scared that they don’t even dare approach the front porch. Some of the smaller children break out in tears, but the older children love the thrill.
今年もハロウィンをユタで迎えることができないのは少し残念ですが、東京で盛大に楽しむ予定です。
I wish I could be in the U.S. for this Halloween, but we will have a great time here in Tokyo.
