東京都心に美しくたたずむ青山霊園を、誰もがご存知だと思います。写真には霊園を取り囲む青山１丁目、赤坂、六本木にあるオフィスビルも写っています（偶然ですが、これらのオフィスビルは墓標のようにも見えます）。
Many people are familiar with the beautiful Aoyama Cemetery in central Tokyo and its views of the surrounding office towers in Aoyama 1-chome, Akasaka, and Roppongi. (Incidentally, these office buildings somewhat resemble grave markers.)
しかし青山霊園の中に、外人墓地の区画があることをご存知でしたか？ この区画は、19世紀後半～20世紀初頭にかけて日本国内で亡くなった外国人のお墓を、東京都が特別管理しているものです。
But have you heard of the Foreign Section of the Aoyama Cemetery? This special section was set aside by the government of Tokyo for foreigners who passed away in Japan in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
この外人墓地には、青山霊園内にある「外人墓地通り」を通って行きます。
The Foreign Section can be accessed via giajin botchi dōri, a pathway in the Aoyama Cemetery.
外人墓地の中には、色々な種類の興味深い墓標があります。和洋折衷式の墓標もあれば、伝統的な西洋式の墓石もあります。超豪華な西洋式墓標があるかと思えば、石棺の形をしたものまでありました。
There are a variety of interesting grave markers in the Foreign Section, including hybrid Western-Japanese-style markers, traditional Western-style headstones, lavish Western-style markers, and even sarcophagi.

外人墓地に埋葬された外国人は、医師、技術者、外交官、宣教師、芸術家、学者など、様々でした（多くは「お雇い外国人」と呼ばれた人たちでした）。彼らはカナダ、イギリス、フランス、ドイツ、アイルランド、イタリア、オランダ、アメリカ合衆国などの祖国を代表して日本に来ていました。
Interred in the Foreign Section are a variety of doctors, engineers, diplomats, missionaries, artists, scholars, and others (many of whom were o-yatoi gaikokujin), who represented their home countries of Canada, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States, among others.
ここに埋葬されている人の中には、ジョセフ・ヒコ（出生時は浜田彦蔵）もいます。彼は帰化してアメリカ合衆国の市民権を得た最初の日本人でした。
Among those interred is Joseph Heco (born Hikozō Hamada (浜田彦蔵)), who was the first Japanese person to be naturalized as a citizen of the United States.
なんと、「ギルバート」というファーストネームを持つ人物もいました。
There is even a person interred whose first name is Gilbert.
彼は日本に約40年間住んで、91歳で亡くなったそうです。ちなみに今ここにいる「ギルバート」は、日本に約37年間（40年間は目の前です）住んでいますが、私が91歳に到達するのは、まだまだ相当先の話です！
He lived in Japan for about 40 years and passed away at the age of 91. This “Gilbert” has lived in Japan for about 37 years (which is almost 40 years), but I am still quite far from being 91!
日本人のお墓の中にも、西洋的だったり、キリスト教に影響を受けた墓標を見つけることが出来ます。
It is possible to see Western- or Christian-influenced grave markers in cemeteries in Japan.
しかし青山墓地ほど、まるで見本市みたいに様々な墓標がある墓地は滅多にないと思います。ついでに言うと、東京都調布市にある多磨霊園にもなかなか興味深い外人墓地区画があって、伝統的なキリスト教、イスラム教、ユダヤ教を象徴する墓標があります。
But very few cemeteries have as rich of specimens as can be found at the Aoyama Cemetery. Incidentally, the Tama Cemetery in Chofu, Tokyo has an interesting foreign section, which includes headstones representing Christian, Muslim, and Jewish traditions.
2005年、青山墓地は色々と議論の的になったことがありました。多くのお墓（外人墓地区画を含む）の管理料がちゃんと支払われていなかった為、立ち退きの警告札まで出されました。幸いにしてこの問題は平和的に解決され、外人墓地区画を今後も「生存」させていくために「外人墓地トラスト」が設立されています。
The Aoyama Cemetery was the subject of much debate in 2005, when fees for many grave plots (including several in the Foreign Section) had not been properly paid, and eviction notices were to be issued soon. Fortunately, the issue was peacefully resolved, and the Foreign Section Trust (http://www.ii-idea.com/
) has been established to ensure that the Foreign Section will continue to “live” on.
