How I Got Started in the Entertainment Industry
時々、私が芸能界に入ったキッカケを聞かれることがあるので、まとめてみました。
People often ask me how I got started in the entertainment industry, so this is the story.
東京インターナショナルプレイヤーズ（TIP）という、主に在日外国人で構成されている舞台演劇サークルが、実は120年近く前から東京に存在していて、毎年４～５回公演しています。（http://www.tokyoplayers.org

There is a theater group comprised mainly of foreign residents called Tokyo International Players (TIP), which amazingly enough has existed for around 120 years in Tokyo. They stage productions four or five times a year.
１９８３年、"The Imaginary Invalid"という有名な演目の公演が１月３１日に予定されていましたが、１月１日に、演出家を務めている友人から、「青年役の男性が急に出演できなくなったので代役をやってくれないか？」と頼まれました。確かに、高校で演劇部にいた経験はあるのですが、１９８０年に就職した後は何も活動していませんでした。国際弁護士の仕事も忙しかったのですが、友人との関係もあって、断り切れませんでした。
In 1983, the famous play "The Imaginary Invalid" was scheduled to be performed on January 31st. On January 1st, the director, who happened to be my close friend, called and asked me to fill in for the role of the young suitor because the former actor for that role had suddenly become unavailable. It is true that I had been in the drama club in high school, but I hadn't done anything like that since starting work as an international lawyer, and my work was very busy. However, because the director was such a good friend, I really didn’t have the option to turn him down.
この演劇の相手役の女性は、あるタレント事務所（Trac One）と契約していて、NECのプロモーションビデオへの出演を予定していました。しかし、そのビデオの相手役男性はまだ決まっていませんでした。彼女の所属事務所の社長がTIPの公演を見に来て、その後、私にNECのビデオへの出演を依頼しました。ちょうど連休の間を利用しての撮影でしたし、ギャラも悪くなかったので、引き受けました。
The woman who played opposite me in the play was under contract with a talent agency (Trac One) and was scheduled to produce a promotional video for NEC, but her opposite in the video had not yet been decided. The president of her agency came to see the play, and after that asked me to be in the NEC video. Filming was to be done over a three-day weekend, and the pay was good, so I did it.
しばらくしたら、その社長から今度は「竹下景子が出演するテレビドラマの仕事をやらないか？」と言われました。当時彼女は「お嫁さんにしたい女性ナンバーワン」として大人気でしたし、撮影は仕事の無い土曜日だということで引き受けました。ロケ地は金沢市。作品は松本清張の「ゼロの焦点」でした。
After a short time, that president asked me if I would like to be in a TV drama with Takeshita Keiko. At that time, she was ranked as the No. 1 actress that men would want to marry, and again the filming was on a Saturday, so I agreed. Filming was on location in Kanazawa. The drama was "Zero no Shouten" by Matsumoto Seicho.
ワンシーンだけですぐに撮影は終わりました。友人や知り合いに「必ず見るように！」とかなり連絡しましたが、オンエアを見たら、写ったのは私の胴体だけで、顔は出てませんでした。少しがっかりしました。しかし、だれもが考える「一度はテレビに出てみたい」という夢が叶ったので、満足でした。
Filming of my one scene was over almost in an instant. I excitedly contacted a large number of friends and acquaintances and asked them to watch it, but when I saw it on air, the only part of me shown was from my neck down. That was a little bit disappointing. But at least I had fulfilled a dream which many people have of being on television once, so I was satisfied.
しばらくすると、その社長が今度は「クイズ番組に出てみないか？」と言ってきました。それはまず無理だと思いました。「連想ゲーム」や「ヒントでピント」のようなクイズは絶対に外国人では無理だと思っていました。しかし社長が、そのような番組ではなく、まずはビデオを見て欲しいというので、外国人記者クラブへ行き、大橋巨泉の「世界まるごとHowマッチ？」のビデオを見せてもらいました。
After another short time, the president of the agency called to ask if I would like to appear on a quiz show. I thought that would be utterly impossible. I didn't see how a foreigner could hold his own on "Password" or "Hinto de Pinto." However, the president said it wasn't that kind of show and wanted to show me a video. So I went to the Foreign Correspondent’s Club and had him show me an episode of Ohashi Kyosen’s “Sekai Marugoto How Much” [How Much for the Whole World?].
ビデオを見たら、私でもできるかも？と思いました。値段をピッタリ当てたら世界一周旅行をもらえるということも魅力的でした。そして、収録日がこれも土曜日だということで、本職には支障がありません。
When I saw the video, I realized that this was something I could probably do. I liked the fact that if I guessed the price exactly, I would win a trip around the world. In addition, the recording was on a Saturday, so it would not interfere with my job.
一般人のつもりで一応出てみました。一回きりのつもりだったので、緊張もしませんでした。まともな打ち合わせもなく、台本もありませんでしたが、私はニアピン賞を一つ取りました。番組が４月から始まって、この撮影が５月の終わりか６月のはじめだったと思いますが、それまで出ていた外国人は一度も賞を取ったことがありませんでした。
I thought I was appearing as a regular person, so I wasn’t nervous because I would only be on the show one time. There was no rehearsal or even any real meeting beforehand, and there was no script, but I managed to win one “Near Pin” (close answer). The show had begun airing in April, and this recording happened probably toward the end of May or the beginning of June, but up until that time no foreign contestant had ever won anything on the show.
その結果を受けて、制作会社（イースト）からは「来週も来て欲しい」と言われました。しかしその時、これが継続的な仕事になる可能性があることに初めて気付いて、２回目の撮影のオープニング（巨泉さんから話しかけられる場面）では、手足が震えるぐらいすごく緊張しました。しかし、２回目もニアピン賞を取りました。それでレギュラーになる話が出てきて、確か、３回目には、値段をぴったり当てるホールインワン賞を取ったと思います。
As a result, the production company (East) asked me to appear again the next week. It was at this point that I realized this could turn into ongoing work, so at the opening of the second show (when Mr. Ohashi has a brief exchange with each contestant), I was so nervous that my hands and feet were shaking. Nevertheless, I took away another “Near Pin.” After that I became a regular on the show, and I won a “Hole in One” (trip around the world) on my third appearance.
一回目のオンエアの２～３日後（１９８３年６月後半）、友人と一緒に原宿の歩道を歩いていたら、友人が「皆が見ているよ。『ほら、あの弁護士だ』と言っているよ」と言いました。最初は自分では気付きませんでしたが、友人に言われたら確かにそうでした。まだ夜１０時台の番組で、視聴率も５％そこそこだったと思いますが、それでも「一度出演しただけでこんなになるんだ！」と、テレビの力は凄いものだなぁと思いました。
Two or three days after the airing of the first show, I was walking down the sidewalk in Harajuku with a friend when he suddenly said, “Hey, everyone’s looking at you and saying ‘It’s that attorney’!”. I didn’t realize it at first, but he was right. At that time, the show still had only about a 5% rating in a 10 p.m. time slot, so I was amazed at the power of television to have this kind of recognition after only one appearance.
１９８０年に東京で就職してから、私は日本のテレビ番組をかなりよく見ていました。当時、外国人はNHKドラマのエキストラか、バラエティー番組の短いシーンの中で「笑われる対象」という扱われ方だったと思います。まともな形で、ビートたけしや石坂浩二のようなスターと並んで、面白いコメントを当たり前に求められるのは、日本のテレビ業界では実質的に初めてだったかも知れません。だからインパクトが大きかったのでしょう。
I used to watch a lot of television when I first started work in Tokyo in 1980. In those days, foreigners were used either as extras in NHK dramas, or as an object of laughter in a short scene in variety shows. For all practical purposes, I think it was a first in the Japanese television industry when I was seated side by side with big stars like Beat Takeshi and Ishizaka Koji and expected to make the same kinds of witty and intelligent comments as them. That must be why it had so much impact.
ちなみに、これは大橋巨泉さんの優れた国際感覚のお陰だと思います。巨泉さん、イーストの皆さん、そして毎日放送の皆さんが、私にこのようなチャンスを与えてくれたことに深く感謝しています。
Incidentally, I think this all came about because of the strong international perspective held by Ohashi Kyosen. I am deeply thankful to Mr. Ohashi, everyone at East, and to the Mainichi Broadcasting System for the huge opportunity which they gave me.
