Events of August, 1945

Today is August 6th, 2014. 69 years have elapsed since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

I am aware that when I write an article with political content the access to my blog and "likes" on Facebook decrease, but I hope you will read this to the end. I am quite sure that the majority of readers will find out something they didn't know before.

The three most important events which people remember as happening in August are:
August 6, 1945: An atom bomb is dropped on Hiroshima.
August 9, 1945: An atom bomb is dropped on Nagasaki.
August 15, 1945: World War II ends.

However, I think Japanese should take a closer look at what else happened during this time concerning their country.

August 6: The United States drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
August 9: In the early hours of August 9th, Russia enters the war against Japan, attacking the Kwantung Army (Japanese forces) in Machuria. 11 hours later, America drops an atomic bomb on Nagasaki.

August 14: Japan communicates it acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration to the Allied Forces.
August 15: Japan announces its acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration to the Japanese people.

August 18: Russia starts it invasion of the Kurile Islands, and continues its advance into China.
August 25: Russia takes control of Karafuto Island.
August 29: Russia stops its advance into China.

September 2: The Allied Forces and Japan sign the documents for the formal surrender of Japan (aboard the Battleship Missouri). Russia had agreed to sign the surrender documents (to end the war), but it continues its military advance.
September 5: Russia unilaterally terminates its military advance after having taken total control of Manchuria, the northern half of the Korean Peninsula, the southern part of Karafuto Island, the Northern Kurile Islands, and all of Etorofu Island, Kunashiri Island, Shikotan Island, and Habomai Island.

Those Japanese who don't have any particular interest in the Northern Territories issue probably are not sufficiently aware of the sequence of events at the end of World War II.

Incidentally, for the United States, the end of World War II (V-J Day) is the day the surrender treaty was signed, September 2, 1945.
