サッカーのワールドカップ、ブラジル大会はドイツの優勝で終わりましたね。
The FIFA World Cup Tournament has finally ended in victory for Germany.
残念ながら日本は予選リーグ敗退に終わりました。しかし、日本のサポーターたちが悔しい負け試合の直後にもかかわらず、あらかじめ持参したゴミ袋を使い、試合後すぐにゴミを集め始めた姿を見て、私を含む世界中の人たちが心から驚きました。
Unfortunately, Japan was eliminated in the first round. The whole world, including me, was surprised and impressed at images of the Japanese fans who, despite disappointment at their loss, immediately after the game used garbage bags which they had brought with them to gather up the trash around their seats.
二年後にオリンピック開催を控えたリオデジャネイロ州政府は、日本のサポーターたちの今回の行為に対して表彰状を送ったそうです。

The State Government of Rio de Janeiro, which will host the Olympics in two years, has awarded a Certificate of Appreciation to the Japanese supporters for their actions.
しかし実を言うと、この件で私がもっとも驚いたのは、世界中が称賛したこのゴミ集めについて、多くの日本人の友人が少しも驚くことなく「日本人には普通です」と言い放ったことでした。
The thing that surprised me the most is this: Many of my Japanese friends dismissed the praise from the rest of the world over picking up garbage, saying "This is normal for Japanese."
後で聞いたところ、
「来た時よりも美しく」 "Leave everything cleaner than you found it."
「立つ鳥あとを濁さず」 "It is simply common courtesy to clean up after yourself."
といった格言を、日本人は子供の頃から「常識」としてしつけられるとか。それであれば、今回のような行動は日本人にとって確かに「普通」のことかも知れません。
I later heard that Japanese children are brought up with these maxims. If that is the case, then the actions of these fans were indeed "normal" to Japanese people.
しかし私はあえて、日本人の皆さんに強く言いたいのです。
But I would like to make the following strong statement to my Japanese friends.
この行為を「普通」だと考える「あなた方日本人」は、世界基準で言うと、まったく「普通」ではありません。世界のどの国も真似できない尊敬される行為が「普通」と言えますか？
If you Japanese think that is "normal," then you are not "normal" by world standards.
It is very hard to call honorable actions which cannot be duplicated by other countries "normal."
このような行為を「普通」と思える日本人の国民性に、誇りを感じて下さい。
You should take great pride in a national character that views such actions as "normal."
