Normal for Japan
今朝、ＡＦＮ（米軍放送網 旧ＦＥＮ)のラジオ放送を聞いていたら、ブラジルで開催中のワールドカップの話をしていました。
On AFN (the U.S. military radio station in Tokyo) this morning, they were discussing the World Cup soccer being held in Brazil.
その中で「コートジボワールとの初戦に負けて日本人サポーターはがっかりしているはずなのに、彼らはその直後に、自分たちのいた観客席を隅々まで掃除していたんだ！凄いだろう！感動するだろう！」と話していました。
The announcer said "Even though the Japanese fans were disappointed at losing the first game to the Ivory Coast team, after the game they cleaned up all the trash around their seats. Can you believe that? It's incredible."
私はとても感動したので、その件を電話で日本人の友人に話したところ「日本人の感覚では、普通の行為ですよ」と言いました。
「いや、絶対に普通じゃないよ！凄いよ！」と私は言いましたが、彼は「いや、普通です」と譲りません。
I was quite impressed, but because I hadn't heard that on the Japanese news, I called and told a Japanese friend to see if he had heard about it. The friend replied, "That would seem quite normal to a Japanese," but I insisted "No, that is not normal, it's amazing!"
日本と関わるようになって40年以上になりますが、日本人の「普通」の感覚はレベルが高すぎて、私にはまだ身についていないようです！（笑）
Even after being involved with Japan for more than forty years, I guess a proper sense of what is normal is still beyond me.
