一昨日の夜、六本木男声合唱団倶楽部の歌の練習で、ビートルズのYesterdayを練習していました。その中の下りで、I’m not half the man I used to beとありますが、発音指導をしていた私はhalfの発音を説明したら、鋭い質問が飛び出ました。「HalfのＬはなんですか？」
The night before last at singing practice for the Roppongi Mens Chorus Club, we were practicing the Beatles song “Yesterday.” In the song, there is a phrase “I’m not half the man I used to be.” I was explaining the proper pronunciation when a very good question was raised: “What is the L in half?”
正解は、無音子音です。
The answer is of course that it is an unvoiced (silent) consonant.
Ｌという子音は、限りなく日本語のラ行の発音に近いです。だから、華原朋美さんは、自分の名前を英語で表現するときにKahala Tomomiと言います。よほど正しい発音に近いのです。
The consonant “L” is very close to the pronunciation of what we express in Romanization as R in Japanese. For that reason, Tomomi Kahara (a famous singer) lists her name in English as Tomomi Kahala. This is much closer to the proper pronunciation.

しかし、場合によっては「Ｌ」が無音になります。主なスペルのパターンは、「LK, LF, LV, ULD」です。以下の例語を覚えておけば便利だと思います。
