The mass media in Japan is suddenly all abuzz over the fact that North Korea announced on May 29th that it will reinvestigate the Japanese abductee matter. At the same time, I think there are very few people who are aware that there is also an American who was abducted, so I would like to discuss that here.

On August 14, 2004, David Sneddon, from Providence, Utah, went missing in Yunnan Province in southwest China. At the time, he was a student at Brigham Young University (B.Y.U.), where I also studied. He had been admitted to B.Y.U. Law School where he was scheduled to continue his studies upon his return from China, so it is impossible that he would have disappeared of his own accord. I have met his parents and heard the details from them directly, so I am quite certain of this conclusion.

In point of fact, North Korean abduction of foreigners occurred frequently in early August. It is thought that every year at the celebration of the anniversary of the liberation of the country (August 15th), a report on the success of abductions was presented to the late General Secretary Kim Jong-Il. The day Sneddon went missing was the day before that celebration. Besides his mother tongue of English, Sneddon was fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Korean, making him a perfect candidate to serve as an English instructor for North Korean agents.

On July 9th of that year, Charles Jenkins, the American military defector who had served as an English instructor, left North Korea to be reunited in Japan with his wife, Hitomi Soga, so it is thought that a new instructor who spoke American English was needed. In addition, on July 21st, the North Korean Human Rights Act was passed unanimously by the U.S. House of Representatives, providing for action to be taken on North Korean human rights abuses, and North Korea suggested that it would take retaliatory action.

Based on various other concrete circumstances, I am quite certain that Sneddon was abducted by North Korea. Accordingly, it is very regrettable that the Obama administration is not more actively pursuing this matter. The picture is from a symposium held concerning this matter at the Japanese Diet Members’ Office Building in Tokyo, and shows me reading a message from Sneddon’s parents. For those who want more information about this incident, please refer to the following URLs. Mr. Shinzo Abe, the current prime minister, was also present at this symposium.
