Saito Yuko and Me

Last month, I happened to see a variety television program hosted by Akashiya Sanma, and one of the guests was Saito Yuko, whom we have not seen on TV for some time. Incidentally, she spells her name differently in Japanese now, but it is still the same in English.

You may remember that at the time she was on television, she was regarded as the one female entertainer who looked the best is “arare megane,” or “geeky glasses” (horn-rimmed glasses). I think her most famous commercial was advertising burritos for Seven-Eleven.

Back in 1984, I was a big fan of hers, so I was very happy when we ended up doing a television commercial together. She was in such high demand that it was very difficult to match our schedules, and we ended up shooting the commercial beginning at two o’clock in the morning. As I recall, she had commercials for twelve different companies running simultaneously.

Although the filming was the middle of the night, it was also the middle of the summer, and the air conditioning in the studio was weak and noisy, so it had to be turned off during actual filming. In addition, of course the lights were very hot, so a production assistant was assigned to point an electric fan directly at each of us except when the cameras were actually rolling.

I have not seen Yuko-san on television for many years, but apparently she has been working as a voice actress. It was really great to see her again, and it brought back fond memories of when we worked together.
