Japan Is Crowded
日本は狭い国だとよく言われます。確かに、人間の数と有効利用可能な面積を比例して諸外国と比べたら、人口密度は世界トップクラスです。アメリカのカリフォルニア州よりもちょっと広い面積に、アメリカの40％の人口が暮らしています。しかも日本は山が多くて、実際利用可能な面積は20％以下だと言われています。
Everyone says Japan is a very crowded country. When the number of people and the proportion of the land area that can actually be used in Japan are compared with that of other countries, the population density of Japan ranks as one of the highest in the world. The whole population of Japan, which is about 40% that of the whole United States, lives in an area just slightly larger than the state of California. In addition, because Japan is very mountainous, only about 20% of the total land area can actually be used for anything.
さて、どんなに狭いのか、この写真をご覧ください。右側に移っているのは私の東京の家です。境界線からちゃんと50センチ下がっています。その左側に移るのは隣のＳさんのお宅で、35センチしか下がっていません。
Take a look at these pictures to see just how crowded it is. On the right you will see my Tokyo house. It is set back 50 centimeters from the property line. On the left is the S. Family’s house, set back just 35 centimeters.
そして、Ｓさんがわずかなスペースに車を停めています！すごいと思いませんか？左側も右側も2センチも空いていませんよ。前面道路は一応幅4メートルですが、どうやって入れるのか想像しにくいです。ご覧の通り、入れるために土台を少し削っています。
Mr. S. parks his car in this tiny space. There is only about 2 centimeters (about an inch) of space on each side. The street in front is 4 meters wide, but it is hard to imagine how he maneuvers the car in and out. As you can see from the picture, he has actually shaved the foundation of his house a bit so he can get into the space.
Ｓさんは運転技術が高くて、3回の切り替えしでこんなにきれいに停められます。降りる時は運転席の反対側の後ろのドアから降ります。不便ではありますが、これこそ日本（あるいは東京）の現状を象徴しています。
Mr. S is a skilled driver, so he only has to go back and forth three times to park. However, when he gets out of his car, he has to use the back door on the passenger side of the car. It’s inconvenient, but this exemplifies the crowded conditions in Japan (or at least in Tokyo).
