昭和40年代の後半、九州に住んでいましたが、カルピスという製品をよく飲んでいました。自家製のものの作り方を覚えて、アメリカに戻ってから自分で作ったこともあります。しかし、その当時から今日に至るまで、そのネーミングが気になります。
We drank lots of Calpis when I was living in Kyushu around 1972 and 1973. We learned how to make it ourselves, and after I returned to America, I made my own. To this day, however, I have been curious about the naming of this product.
外国人（英語圏の人）がその製品名を口にすると、どうしても音的に“Cow Piss”と聞こえます。Pissという汚い英単語は「おしっこ」という意味です。つまりカルピスは「牛のおしっこ」と聞こえるのです。しかもこれは乳酸菌の製品だから、なおさら連想してしまいます。
Whenever a native English speaker says the name of the product, it sounds like “cow piss” to me. I know I am not the only native English speaker that has this problem. This is well-known among the foreign community. It’s even worse because the product is made from lactobacillus (milk).
カルピスの本社は私の家から徒歩で数分しか離れていないところにあり、カロリーが多少高いとしても健康に良い製品だとは認めますが、このネーミングは何とかなりませんでしょうか…。それともやはり、今更遅いのでしょうか…。私たちがどう思っても、最近アサヒグループに買収されたので、明らかに売れ行きが好調です。
The head office of Calpis is just a few minutes’ walk from my home. Although the product is slightly high in calories, I know it is a healthy product, but isn’t there something that could be done about the name. Or is it already too late? No matter what we may think, it’s obviously very profitable since the Asahi Group recently bought the company.
