It places particular focus on issues of scalability and how to apply these techniques against large data sets using the Apache Hadoop framework. You've read one of the general purpose "this is Hadoop" books -either the Definitive Guide or Hadoop in Action. The only one around it seems is Mahout in Action but its good and all the code for examples is available for download. You aren't concerned with managing the cluster. If you plan to run it on hadoop (which is recommended) then of course you need that too. In terms of storage Hive can use any file system supported by Hadoop, although HDFS is by far the most common. Hive is built on Hadoop and uses Hadoop's storage and execution modules.
