グラミー賞の結果などどうでもいい――BTSは、母国韓国での兵役義務を終えた7人による初のスタジオ・アルバム（通算10作目）『Arirang』で、今年最高傑作の一つを世に送り出した。正直なところ、兵役明けの復帰作が並外れたものである必要はなかったはずだ。活動休止直前に彼らが作っていたような、壮大でポップ、かつラジオ映えするヒット曲で戻ってくることも容易だっただろう。しかし彼らは、キャリア初期に彼らの個性を際立たせていたラップやヒップホップのルーツに立ち返り、その土台の上に、独自の歌声の活かし方について学んできたすべてを積み重ねる道を選んだ。本作には魅力的な要素が満載だ。「Body to Body」は高揚感に満ちており（終盤で「アリラン」のメロディが引用される演出は、ライブで最高の体験となるだろう）、「Like Animals」や「Normal」では興味深いオルタナティブ・ロックの雰囲気を探求している（特に後者でVが歌う「Got me feelin’ things unusual」というフレーズは、一度聴いたら耳から離れない）。彼らは時に大胆で茶目っ気があり、時に鋭く、そして時に甘い表情を見せる。全体として、『Arirang』はBTSがこれまで歩んできた道のりと、彼らが（願わくば）向かおうとしている未来を鮮やかに描き出した、説得力のある作品に仕上がっている。――P. クレア・ドッドソン

Grammys be damned—BTS released one of the best albums of the year in Arirang, their 10th studio album and first since the seven members completed their mandatory military enlistment in their native South Korea. Honestly, the first BTS comeback post-military didn’t need to be extraordinary; it would have been easy for the group to return with the kind of stuff they were making just before their hiatus—big, poppy, radio-friendly hits. Instead, they returned to the rap and hip-hop roots that distinguished them early in their career and built upon that foundation with all they’ve learned about how to use their unique voices. There are so many things to love here: “Body to Body” is a rush (and the closing Arirang interpolation makes for an incredible live experience), “Like Animals” and “Normal” see them delve into an interesting alt-rock vibe (the way V sings, “Got me feelin’ things unusual” on the latter is a serious earworm). They’re, at turns, brash and silly, pointed and sweet. As a whole, Arirang is a compelling encapsulation of where BTS has been and where they are (hopefully) going. —P. Claire Dodson
