OMOTENASHI 3

What is Omotenashi?

Masa:

Omotenashi is based on a verb Motenasu.

That means to host a party/dinner or treat the guests.

“O” is like a proposition to express respect to the listener.

“Motenshi” is a noun of the verb Motenasu.

Combined, it means “to take care of the guests by hosting (a dinner) with Respect.”

So in short it means “the highest form of hospitality. “

This is the very basic translation.

Sushi man

Masa san! It is awesome!

Masa:

Hold on!

There is another meaning!!!!!

When you break Omotenashi with Omote and nashi… it makes another sense of hospitality!

Sushi Man

Wow!!

Masa:

Okay.

“Omote” means a “(front) face”

“Nashi” means “nothing!”

Combined, it means “No (Public) Face”

This indicates the honest hospitality.

Sushi Man:

Hmmm

It is very interesting. No public face…

I wonder what that means…

Masa:

We will discuss about no public face next time!

To me Omotenashi means everything you can think of to serve the best and memorable dinner as a journey.

I love what I do! I hope you get it!!

Sushi man:

Yes Masa san!

I think I have a lot to learn!

Masa:

You are awesome!!!

Let’s do this!!!
