With 「敬老の日」「Respect for the Aged Day」coming up in a few days, I have found myself reminicing on the happy days I spent visiting with my grandparents as a child growing up.

I remember as if it were only yesterday, so vividly how my grandfather, a fire chief, would give my grandmother, a kindergarten teacher,「a peck on the cheek」on his way to work and later when he came home. He would never miss a day, and took deliberate steps to find her in order to give her this gesture of his affection.

We lost our beloved grandpa to pneumonia and then several years later, beloved grandma to cancer.

Although, they are gone now, I still have fond memories of my grandparents.

Questions to ponder upon.

1.)  So much was conveyed by grandpa's gesture of affection. How do you convey your affection for a loved one?

2.)  Do/Did you have an opportunity to spend time with your grandparents? Be sure to elaborate.

3.)  With the rising population of the elderly in Japan, would you if you could, adopt-a-grandparent figure?

※By way, did you know that 「Grandparent's Day」in the US is celebrated on the 1st Sunday after Labor Day? This year it was celebrated on Sunday, September 11.
