New Role for Messaging

torrance, calif. -- New features and functions in both handsets and answering machines are making messaging a whole lot easier.

Casio has released the Casio TC-945 PhoneMate, a cordless 2-line 900MHz phone with a 2-line answering machine. The release trailed the debut of Solopoint's S-210 Voice Mail Manager, a phone add-on that enables voice mail to work much like an answering machine, via push-button access to familiar functions like call-screening, the ability to jump into a phone call after the caller starts leaving a message and a flashing message indicator light.

One of TC-945's 's most Newcastle interesting features is Modem Monitor, which, says Casio, prevents the telephone from interrupting online sessions and safeguards data during file transfers, by distinguishing between voice and data communication. Other features include dual keypads with speakerphone, separate message playback by line, and simultaneous answering of both lines. Targeted at the small office/home office market, the 2-line digital answering machine can handle up to 24 minutes of digital recordings and greetings on both lines. The system incorporates watches-z six Casio PhoneMate-issued patents and additional patents pending. Priced at $179, the TC-945 will be available in January.

"The TC-945 is designed to take advantage of a number of important emerging trends in the home and the office," said Stephen Knuth, president of Casio PhoneMate. "Two lines are becoming increasingly popular in American households, and home-based businesses are beginning to embrace two-line answering machines as a real alternative to Central Office voice mail."

Solopoint's index-card sized S-910 may particularly appeal to road warriors weary of entering myriad codes and navigating through convoluted mail paths. The one-button access dial up voice mail service, automatically enters codes and plays new messages through speakers. Its Voice Mail Manager feature, which enables the deletion, saving, rewinding, skipping and canceling of messages via a single button may also be welcome. Another interesting element is its "ignore" function, which allows the user to listen in, initially, to the call as it is being received, and then automatically delete the unwanted call before it concludes. The system, which doesn't require a second phone line to receive faxes, can also direct faxes to a local fax machine, and voice calls to voice mail.

Though new features are being incorporated today into handsets, given the proliferation of wireless phones and fax machines the long-term trend is towards unified messaging mailboxes, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). Unified messaging boxes allow users to access voice, fax and e-mail messages from a single mailbox. The analyst firm projects that there will be 2.5 million unified messaging mailboxes by the end of 2002, many adopted by road warriors. Small businesses are also a likely candidate for adoption. OEMs are already starting to build those capabilities into their systems, as a way to differentiate themselves from their competitors -- an approach that may put them ahead of the game, says IDC.

DEAR DR. GOTT: I am an 89-year-old male enjoying good health. I have A-fib, but it doesn't bother me and I get a reasonable amount of exercise.

I have had myelodysplasia for 12 years. As a result, my white- cell count is low. My cholesterol is 142, and my HDL and LDL are normal or below. I take iron pills every day. At my age and with my history, does it make any difference whether I have one or six eggs per week or bacon every other day?

My second question regards salmon. I eat it frequently and enjoy it. I understand that the omega-3 is largely contained in the fish's fat. And I note that most of the fat clings to the skin. Should we not also eat the skin for maximum benefits?

DEAR READER: A healthy heart has four chambers that contract in an orderly manner. Atrial fibrillation (A-fib) is the result of the heart's two upper chambers being stimulated to contract rapidly and in an abnormal fashion.
